Screened wells

In-well aeration is the process of injecting air into the lower portion of a dual-screened well with perforations at the bottom and above the water table. As the bubbles rise, they expand, which causes the mixed mass of air and water to have less density. The result is an air-lift pump effect. When the water rises and exits the upper perforations, replacement water enters the bottom of the well. The result is a circulation cycle. Free air does not enter the aquifer, but dissolved air (and oxygen) travels with the circulating water. Figure 9.4 is a schematic diagram of in-well aeration. 

The vacuum-vaporized well technology is a proprietary process that combines vacuum extraction, bioremediation, and soil flushing to mobilize contaminants in the vadose, capillary, and saturated zones. A schematic of the double-screened well with the equipment contained within is shown in Figure 10.12. 

Stringent regulatory requirements in the United States often require the incorporation of fish protection facilities at power plant intakes. There are three different concepts that can be used fish collection and removal, fish diversion, and fish deterrance. The incorporation of fish protection systems at specific sites can necessitate modifications to conventional intake designs. Such modifications can influence screen-well layouts and selection of screens and pumps, and in certain cases require model studies to develop design criteria which will ensure that fish protection facilities will be biologically effective and not adversely affect plant operations. 9 refs, cited.
