Fulfillment Processes

Fulfillment logistics is responsible for three key tasks order management, product customization at the warehouse, and distribution (Ricker and Kalakota 1999). Restructuring of the fulfillment process is discussed in Chap. 6. 

Order capture processes enter customer s request for products. It does so using a standard interface platform. Order validation creates the library of business and technical rules that can be used to determine if an order is valid and should be accepted for further processing. For example, business rules define possible actions on customer s credit limit and/or the contractual terms. Technical rules define availability of services needed to complete the order in the customer s premises. Order decomposition provides a mechanism to generate multiple sub-orders based on the product definition (product decomposition) or based on the delivery location (work order decomposition). The order management process can be automated, and made transparent. The components of order management process facilitate better communication based on the electronic product catalog. As discussed, order management enables the customer to purchase products from multiple service platforms.

Central processing unit (CPU) This is in the form of a micro controller and can be called the brain of the PLC. It computes and analyses the various data fed into it. It acts like a comparator and makes decisions on the corrective action necessary to fulfil process needs according to the instructions received from the program stored in the memory and generates the output commands. 

Particularly if pellets with high density or strength and small diameter must be produced, the necessary die thickness and effective hole length may be rather incompatible. The key to effective SCM is meeting or exceeding customer need dates. It is important to achieve high order-fill rates either on a line item or order basis. Hie second break through was that of proving that high speed data acquisition systems (Scaimers) could be procured for process monitoring with sufficient Inherent reliability and functions to fulfill process safety monitoring requirements. 

Starting on the path to the proactive system offers many opportunities for short-term improvement. There may be ways to integrate, permanently or temporarily, the widget fulfillment process without automation. For example, in the case above, we combined the functions of inventory management and purchasing into the role of the planner buyer. 

We now describe the ATP system for a particular electronic product (denoted by EP) manufactured by Toshiba Corporation. The EP supply chain consists of multiple final assembly and testing (FAT) factories all located in Japan, which provide EPs delivered directly to domestic business customers. An ATO production framework is employed. The order promising and fulfillment process involves several thousand product models. Order sizes range from a very small number of units to a few hundred. Orders are generated by one of several sales units and are processed by a single central order processing system. The ATP system collects orders over a 1/2 hour time interval and returns commitments to the sales offices at the end of each ATP run (V2 hour interval), order commitments are booked up to ten weeks in advance of delivery. 

In one of its final assembly factories, Maxtor Corporation offers a component-level product. Hard Disk Drive (HDD), to its customers for further assembly of desktop PCs, high-end servers, consumer electronics products, network attached storage (NAS) server appliances, etc. (see www.maxtor.com). Maxtor has partnership-based B2B relationships with its customers. In this setting, customer orders are not given as specific order quantities and order due dates. Instead, only the total order quantity in each week is specified with permitted minimum and maximum quantity limits. In its order promising and fulfillment processes, Maxtor does not postpone customer orders to later weeks (i.e. no backorders), but it may deny customer orders subject to liability and/or penalties. While customer orders are promised weekly, the order fulfillment process is executed daily to provide accurate resource utilization and production schedules (see Ali, et al. 1998). 

System scope - An order fulfillment process may involve different locations across a supply chain. Retailers, warehouses, manufacturers and even suppliers can be associated with alternate locations. In the more complex cases, determining how to satisfy a set of orders can represent a complex distribution management problem.

Now the flow moves in two directions. In the first instance, it moves to delivery of the finished products or services. Fulfillment processing takes place in accordance with the delivery charmel set up by the customer. Shipping advice should be available and an advance shipping notice (ASN) sent to the customer at the appropriate time, advising of the proposed delivery schedule. This data should also flow to the warehouse management system (WMS) and transportation management system (TMS) set up...

All of this leads to the conclusion that the order fulfilment process should be designed as an integrated activity across the company with the conventional... 

The effect that such groups can have is often dramatic. Because all the key people in the order fulfilment process are brought together and linked around a common entity - the order - they are better able to sort out problems and eliminate bottlenecks. Order cycle times can be dramatically reduced as teamwork prevails over interdepartmental rivalry. New ways of dealing with problems emerge, more non-value-added activities are eliminated and customer service problems - when they arise - can quickly be resolved, since all the key people are in close connection with each other.
