Manage Transportation

Like facilities and inventory, there are benefits in having common resources for transportation. These include both internal (intra-company) and external (inter-company) transportation requirements. This enabling process includes selection of a transportation service provider and the mix of internal and purchased resources. Effectiveness here should be measured in terms of service, not cost. Minimizing transportation cost at the price of poor service will be costly in terms of customer satisfaction.

Economic evaluation is an assessment of the probable benefit or reward of a proposed course of action, relative to other choices. Although the benefit usually takes the form of a financial return, in environmental management, transportation (qv), health care, and other social areas, the benefit may be a social gain instead. Execution activities supported by transportation include movement of parts between memufactur-ing centers and movement of spare parts and finished products to customers and distribution centers, all of which are revenue producing. The supporting activities of managing transportation fleets and services are also supported. 

Hence, a chemical s SC can be defined as all (business) units and processes involved in the production and distribution of this chemical. FVom this point of view, chemical production networks of large-scaled chemical companies are major parts of the SCs of many chemicals. A particular property of chemical SCs is that a comparatively small number of independent companies is involved in the SC. This is because chemical companies are often deeply integrated, i.e. many subsequent production steps are processed by a chemical company. On the supply side, raw material suppliers such as oil-producing companies and refineries are to be taken into account. Moreover, logistical service providers managing transport and distribution processes play a vital role in chemical SCs. 

How does the supply chain impact a product s score Notice that several of the decisions we discussed in previous chapters have a direct impact on a product and a company s score supplier management, transportation, emissions, waste, recycling, packaging, and so on. As more customers start comparing products and making purchase decisions reflecting their individual preferences, the supply chain will impact the top line revenues, in addition to the costs. 

Optimization methods from Operations Research are powerful instmments to solve many kinds of problems efficiently. Nevertheless, it is important to point out that the supposed optimal solutions of quantitative optimization methods are only optimal concerning the underlying quantitative model. The applicability and benefits of these methods strongly depend on the possibility of a suitable quantification. While, for example, logistic processes (stock management, transport routing, etc.) are very suitable for a quantitative description and optimizadcm, other fundamental corporate objectives like customer satisfaction or efficient communication are hardly transferable into an adequate objective function.
