The primary anti-wear variants for today s barrels are usually a solid barrel or a barrel with a replaceable insert. The type selected depends on a thorough analysis of process engineering and production engineering, as well as economical aspects. 

As addressed in the previous section, there is a wide range of material variants available for barrels with replaceable inserts. Processing-related functions such as heating and cooling can be integrated into the outer barrel, which is generally made of heat-treated steel. The outer barrel can also incorporate elements for devolatilization, side intake, etc., so the actual insert has become a simple component that can therefore be made from a variety of different material, such as ...

Particularly if pellets with high density or strength and small diameter must be produced, the necessary die thickness and effective hole length may be rather incompatible. In a mould for a hub cap 4.16(a) with injection from the inside, the appearance of the sprue is not significant, so it is possible to use a nozzle with sprue gate which is easy from the production aspect. The sprue is located in a replaceable insert, and the insulating chamber prevents nozzle clogging. 

Replaceable gate inserts and tips increase the range of application of nozzles. Replaceable inserts enable the mould injection concept to be altered without the need to change the whole nozzle. 

The wide variety of designs for the front zone of the nozzle has arisen because of the need to adapt to different material properties and types of product. Figure 4.37 shows different types of nozzle with replaceable inserts.
