Hard disk drives

Mass storage device. Typically, fixed-head hard disk drives are used to store ac tive data, including on-line and historical databases and non-memory-resident programs. Memory-resident programs are stored to allow loading at system startups. The tape drives are used for archives and backups. 

SCREEN will run on an IBM-PC compatible personal computer with at least 2S6K of RAM. The program will run with or without a math coprocessor chip. Execution time will be greatly enhanced with a math coprocessor chip present (about a factor of S in computer time) and will also benefit from the use of a hard disk drive.

The minimal hardware requirements, which are certainly adequate for all items discussed here, are an IBM or IBM-compatible PC equipped with at least 640 K RAM, a single floppy disk drive, at least a 40-Mbyte hard disk drive, a CD-ROM drive, a VGA color monitor, and a printer. The basic point here is that hardware requirements are minimal and readily available. In the case of the laser disk products, a laser disk drive and high resolution (VGA) monitor are also required.

Mitsui Chemicals is launching a new grade of carbon nanotube reinforced thermoplastic poly-imide, Aurum CNT, with supplementary specific properties such as dust reduction and antistatic behaviour. Targeted applications are, for example, processing jigs for semiconductor or hard disk manufacturing, and parts for hard disk drives.

In contrast to the discussion above with amorphous barriers, it is possible to use first-principles electron-structure calculations to describe TMR with crystalline tunnel barriers. In the Julliere model the TMR is dependent only on the polarization of the electrodes, and not on the properties of the barrier. In contrast, theoretical work by Butler and coworkers showed that the transmission probability for the tunneling electrons depends on the symmetry of the barrier, which has a dramatic influence on the calculated TMR values [20]. In the case of Fe(100)/Mg0(100)/Fe (100) the majority of electrons in the Fe are spin-up. They are derived from a band of delta-symmetry. In 2004 these theoretical predictions were experimentally confirmed by Parkin et al. and Yusha et al. [21, 22]. Remarkably, by 2005 TMR read heads were introduced into commercial hard disk drives.
