Flower sex expression of cucumbers can be modified by treating seedlings with several growthregulating substances With the exception of gibberellin, chemicals tend to reduce the number, or suppress the development, of staminate flowers, and increase the number or accelerate the development of pistillate flowers Gibberellin, in contrast, increases the number of staminate flowers in monoecious cucumbers and results in the formation of staminate flowers on gynoecious cucumbers which otherwise would produce only pistillate flowers In promotive effects on staminate flower formation and vegetative extension, GA4 is approximately tenfold more active than GA3 ... [Pg.80]

The FDA does not approve dietary supplements. Many supplements designed to reduce appetite contain hoodia. The hoodia plant has large, fleshy colored flowers that smell like rotten meat. The stinky flowers attract flies to pollinate them. Once the spines have been removed, the stems of the plant are eaten raw or manufactured to be used as appetite suppressants. [Pg.29]

In a study of hairy vetch flail-chopped after flowering in late May, the dead mulch suppressed weeds effectively for 6 weeks after corn was planted, but weed dry weight at the end of the season was equal to that of the weedy check (Janke and Peters, 1989 Lai et al, 1991 Hoffman et al., 1993). These researchers also found that delayed kill of hairy vetch resulted in greater weed suppression. [Pg.532]

A layer of straw is placed beneath the strawberry plants to make sure that the fruits stay clean and to prevent the spread of grey rot and rhizome rot [Phytophthora cactorum). In addition the straw conserves soil moisture (this can also be a disadvantage), suppresses weeds and makes it easier to move around. The straw (80-100 kg/acre) is put down just before the fruits touch the soil. If this job is carried out before or during flowering, there is an increased risk of damage from late frost (because the soil is... [Pg.78]

In humans, phenylbutazone therapy has been associated with bone marrow dyscrasias, such as agranulocytosis and aplastic anemia (Flower et al 1985). Care should be taken when handling the product to prevent human exposure. The use of phenylbutazone in horses has been banned in many European countries because of concerns for human health and because the horse is considered a food animal under European law. Nevertheless, it is still prescribed very commonly for musculoskeletal conditions in the USA and the UK. It is interesting to note that there is only one report in the literature of bone marrow suppression occurring with phenylbutazone therapy in a horse and in that case very high doses of the agent had been administered (Murray 1985). [Pg.257]

N.B, An ancient mode of branching rare in Phanerogams ir the dichotomous one, where the stem forks into two equal branches. This type of branching is in the flowering plants mainly retained in the nerva-ture of the petals. Elsewhere pseudo-dichotomy (in which the terminal bud has been suppressed) regularly occurs in the ultimate branches of cymose Inflorescences. [Pg.42]

The story of environmental cancer in the mid-twentieth century is inextricably linked with the name of Wilhelm Hueper (1894—1979). Hueper was a scientific pioneer in a field that did not fully flower until his career was at an end. Beyond that, his story epitomizes the era s struggles over environmental protection. Hueper s stubborn insistence on the dangers of modern industry made him a bete noire for chemical manufacturers even before the appearance in 1962 of Rachel Carson s Silent Spring, for which he was a principal scientific source. In the history of the industry s often successful efforts to suppress Hueper s research, one sees the sharply etched image of behavior that more often can only be glimpsed through a fog of evasions and excuses. [Pg.59]
