Flow fracture mechanics

Discussion threads are conceptually similar to newsgroups, but can be accessed on the web. The two most popular threads relevant to corrosion and materials are www. intercorr.com/discuss/x where x can be coatings, inhibitor, cathodic protection, multiphase flow, fracture mechanics, etc. [Pg.326]

At strain rates below e, energy-limited spall is expected to proceed through a brittle (fracture dominated) spall mechanism while for strain rates greater than 8, a ductile (flow-dominated) mechanism is expected. [Pg.289]

A third model for feature-scale polish was proposed by Runnels [40], and focuses on stresses created by flowing slurry on feature surfaces under continuum mechanics. The model incorporates fracture mechanics and chemistry through empirical means. The geometry of a typical structure under study is shown in Fig. 8. [Pg.103]

Materials science associated with fracture mechanics has mainly been confined to composite materials such as concrete, ceramics and metals. Much of the emphasis of the research has been on preventing fatigue and failure rather than designing for it to occur. The way a structure deforms and breaks under stress is crucial for properties such as flow and fracture behaviour, sensory perception of structure, water release and the mobility and release of active compounds. In the case of foods, the ability to break down and interact with the mouth surfaces provides texture and taste attributes. The crack propagation in a complex supramolecular structure is highly dependent on the continuous matrix, interfacial properties and defects and the heterogeneity of the structure. Previous structure-fracture work has dealt with cellular plant foods, and it has been demonstrated that the fracture path differs between fresh and boiled carrots due to cellular adhesion and cell wall strength as well as cell wall porosity and fluid transport (Thiel and Donald 1998 Stoke and Donald 2000 Lillford 2000). [Pg.271]

Recognizing the importance of the coupled hydro-mechanical effects on the performance of civil engineering structures involving fractured rocks, the stress-flow coupling mechanism of the dam-foundation system at Longyangxia site was simulated using a three-dimensional Finite Element code, supported by two visco-elastic constitutive models to represent the time-dependent material behaviour of the dam concrete and the foundation rock. The calculated results were concord with the measured ones and helped to interpret the causes of this continuous displacement at the 13" dam section of the Longyangxia hydropower project, towards the left bank. [Pg.753]

Several researchers tried to replace the single-shear plane model by a shear zone model. Lee and Shaffer (1951) provided a slip-line solution by applying the theory of plasticity. In the slip-line model, the metal is assumed to flow along the line of maximum shear lines. The slip-line field solution cannot be applied easily to three-dimensional as well as strain-hardening cases. Sidjanin and Kovac (1997) applied the concept of fracture mechanics in chip formation process. Atkins (2003) demonstrated that the work for creation of new surfaces in metal cutting is significant. He also points out that Shaw (1954) has shown this work to be insignificant. However, when this work is included based on the modem ductile fracture mechanics, even the Merchant analysis provides reasonable results. [Pg.106]

A pipe break need not be assumed if a successful qualification for leak before break, for break preclusion or for low probability of failure has been performed for the piping under consideration, resulting in a sufficiently low frequency of the occurrence of a spontaneous break In general, a fracture mechanics analysis should be performed to calculate the leak size. In lieu of such an analysis, a subcritical crack corresponding to a leak size of 10% of the flow cross-section should be postulated The leak detection system should be shown to have a sensitivity that is adequate to detect the minimum leakage from a crack that is just subcritical. [Pg.43]
