Water mechanism

In suspension polymerization, the monomer gets dispersed in a liquid, such as water. Mechanical agitation keeps the monomer dispersed. Initiators should be soluble in the monomer. Stabilizers, such as talc or polyvinyl alcohol, prevent polymer chains from adhering to each other and keep the monomer dispersed in the liquid medium. The final polymer appears in a granular form.

Subsequent to substrate binding, a promoted-water mechanism is favored for the hydrolysis of the scissile peptide linkage based on the results of chemical, kinetic, and structural investigations of carboxypeptidase A. A general mechanism is shown in Fig. 31, in which the zinc-bound water of the native enzyme is a nucleophile promoted both by zinc and by the general base Glu-270 (Christianson and Lipscomb, 1989).

Foam A sudslike extinguishing agent formed by mixing a foam-producing compound with water. Mechanical foam is produced by agitation, chemical foam is produced when two or more chemicals react.
