The modeling plane suggests that there is a marginal cost-benefit justification for the selection of a given model. Preference mapping can be accomplished with projection techniques such as multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis, but the following discussion focuses on principal components analysis (PCA) [69] because of the interpretability of the results. A PCA represents a multivariate data table, e.g., N rows ( molecules ) and K columns ( properties ), as a projection onto a low-dimensional table so that the original information is condensed into usually 2-5 dimensions. The principal components scores are calculated by forming linear combinations of the original variables (i.e., properties ). These are the coordinates of the objects ( molecules ) in the new low-dimensional model plane (or hyperplane) and reveal groups of similar... 

The pattern can be shaped with traditional carving tools or cut to size with a nichrome hot wire cutter, available from model plane companies.Complex patterns are best cut out as simpler subunits. The pieces are then joined with spray adhesive or rubber cement. These glues will vaporize along with the foam.Surface blemishes in the finished pattern can be filled w/combustible wax filler if needed. 

Actual construction information has been kept to the basics. Those familiar with building model planes and rockets will be able to improve upon the design and come up with a more sophisticated product. For those unfamiliar with radio control or model rocketry I suggest buying a copy of Basics of Radio Control Modeling by Marks and Winter and The Handbook of Model Rocketry by Stine. These and similar publications are available at the local library, hobby shop or bookstore. There are also several radio control plane magazines available at the local news stand.

As has been said before, plane waves might serve as general and straightforward basis functions if there were not the rapid oscillations of the atomic wave functions close to the nuclei. In its current implementation, the CADD method can only deal with 2D problems, i.e., problems where the dislocations all have a line direction perpendicular to the modeled plane. However, the method does not contain any limitation on the dislocation character (edge, screw, or mixed) because periodic boundary conditions along the z direction are used in the atomistic region and three degrees of freedom (displacements U , Uy, and u ) are considered in the two-dimensional (x-y) continuum region. The extension of the methodology to the 3D case is not trivial and is currently being explored.

The Hotellings or T value is a summary statistic of projections in the hyperplane or model plane. Hotellings are the normalized distance of the projection to the model center, or in more simple terms, they could be described as alarm limits across the principal components. In analyzing hotellings, the larger the hotellings are, the less likely that part is to belong to the model population. 

In creating a PCA model, a best fit hyperplane is placed in the data. Typically, the process data is coplanar with the hyperplane, so the distance of the data point or part from the model plane defines the residual error or what is called DModX. The DModX could also be explained as a measurement of the correlation structure of the data. Large DModX values indicate ineompatibility of the data to the model.
