Titration. This method obviously requires physical removal of a sample from the plant and results in the sample being thrown away. In modem equipment samples can be taken at specified intervals from a flowing sample stream using Flow Injection Analysis, enabling the analysis time to be shortened.

Newer techniques for measuring the refractive index allow for instantaneous, real-time measurement in process streams, or alternatively, a special continuous-flow sample well can be installed on bench top instruments. Small, pocket-sized refractometers also make held measurement very simple and reliable. Fiber optic sensors find uses in biomedical applications.

The continuous flow method is still necessary when one must use probe methods which respond only relatively slowly to concentration changes. These include pH, Oj-sensitive electrodes, metal-ion selective electrodes,thermistors and thermocouples, " epr and nmr detection. Resonance Raman and absorption spectra have been recorded in a flowing sample a few seconds after mixing horseradish peroxidase and oxidants. In this way spectra of transients (eompounds I and II) can be recorded, and the effext of any photoreduction by the laser minimized. ...

All solid materials were analyzed by XRD, SEM, infrared, BET surface area, and inductive coupled arc plasma. All up flow samples and co-precipitation samples resulted in acceptable elemental analysis when analyzed for Bi, Fe, and Mo. 

Different methods used for calibrating samplers include rotometers, wet-test meters, pressure gauges across fixed orifices, mass flow meters, hot wire flow meters and bubble tubes. Each of these calibration devices requires an appropriate correction factor. Some of the devices measure mass flow rather than volumetric flow. Sampling requires volumetric flow calibration. 

Stream sampling and flow sampling are terms usually reserved for the collection of sample increments from a free-falling stream of coal as opposed to the collection of increments from a motionless (stopped) conveyor belt. The heart of the SLM extraction procedure is the SLM unit, in which analyte extraction, preconcentration, and sample cleanup take place in one single step. The design of the SLM unit can be engineered according to the intended use of the unit. For instance, if an SLM unit is needed for an automated and flowing sample extraction, it can be manufactured from two blocks of polytetra-fluoroethylene (PTFE), poly vinylidine difluoride (PVDF), or titanium. However, for nonautomated, nonflowing SLM extraction, a short piece of porous HF membrane is used. 

The book is divided into several chapters which include micromachining methods, microfluidic operations (microfluidic flow, sample introduction, sample preconcentration), chemical separations, detection technology, and various chemical and biochemical analysis (applications on cellular analysis, nucleic acid analysis, and protein analysis). Emphasis will be placed on analytical applications although the basic principles about micromachining and fluid flow and control will also be covered only to the extent that their understanding will assist the exploitation of the microfluidic technology on analytical applications.
