Time, Cost, and Equipment Precipitation gravimetric procedures are time-intensive and rarely practical when analyzing a large number of samples. liowever, since much of the time invested in precipitation gravimetry does not require an analyst s immediate supervision, it may be a practical alternative when working with only a few samples. Equipment needs are few (beakers, filtering devices, ovens or burners, and balances), inexpensive, routinely available in most laboratories, and easy to maintain. 

A thorough sampling plan should describe when the sample is to be taken and how many samples are required. It also specifies from what location within the equipment, such as the manway or discharge valve, to take the sample. The plan should also indicate what sampling equipment and sample container should be used, as well as the type of tests to be performed and the acceptance criteria. 

Sample reduction in successive stages—primaiy to secondaiy, secondary to tertiary etc.—can be fulfilled using automatic sampling equipment while observing design principles of statistical sampling. Alternatively, sample quantity reduction may be carried out in a lab-oratoiy.

Select the employee to be sampled and discuss the purpose of the sampling. Inform the employee when and where the equipment will be removed. Stress the importance of not removing or tampering with the sampling equipment. Turn off or remove sampling pumps before an employee leaves a potentially contaminated area (such as when he/she goes to lunch or on a break). 

Place the sampling equipment on the employee so that it does not interfere with work performance.

To avoid contamination of the samples, the sampling equipment should be free from contaminants and a sampling bag must be used to protect the samples from contamination.

Additional information regarding applicator-boom width, spray-tank capacity, and the wheelbase of any vehicle-mounted soil sampling equipment used during the study is also required to ensure that the field plot design accommodates size restrictions of field equipment. 

The air sampler manufacturer, who will also supply certification, often performs calibration of certain kinds of air sampling equipment.
