From gadolinite, a mineral named for Gadolin, a Finnish chemist. The rare earth metal is obtained from the mineral gadolinite. Gadolinia, the oxide of gadolinium, was separated by Marignac in 1880 and Lecoq de Boisbaudran independently isolated it from Mosander s yttria in 1886. [Pg.187]

One type of thick hardwood plywood stiU available is imported from the northern Scandinavian countries and is generally known as Finnish birch. Characteristically, these plywoods are manufactured using multiple layers of veneer of the same thickness, about 1.5 mm (1 /16 in.), and bonded with a urea—formaldehyde or melamine—urea—formaldehyde adhesive. [Pg.382]

The Finnish viscose producer Kemira Oy Saeteri collaborated with Neste Oy on the development of a carbamate derivative route. This system is based on work (89) that showed that the reaction between cellulose and urea gives a derivative easily dissolved in dilute sodium hydroxide ... [Pg.352]

A varnish is often appHed on top of the paint layers. A varnish serves two purposes as a protective coating and also for an optical effect that enriches the colors of the painting. A traditional varnish consists of a natural plant resin dissolved or fused in a Hquid for appHcation to the surface (see Resins, natural). There are two types of varnish resins hard ones, the most important of which is copal, and soft ones, notably dammar and mastic. The hard resins are fossil, and to convert these to a fluid state, they are fused in oil at high temperature. The soft resins dissolve in organic solvents, eg, turpentine. The natural resin varnishes discolor over time and also become less soluble, making removal in case of failure more difficult (see Paint and FINNISH removers). Thus the use of more stable synthetic resins, such as certain methacrylates and cycHc ketone resins, has become quite common, especially in conservation practice. [Pg.420]

Phosphate rock, mined widely throughout the world for its fertilizer value (see Fertilizers), in certain regions contains a few percent of lanthanides. For example, the apatite deposits in the Kola peninsula on the Russian/Finnish border. The Ln content is recoverable from the various processing residues, and because other Ln-containing minerals, such as loparite [12173-83-0], are also found there, the location suppHes a significant part of the demand in Eastern Europe. [Pg.365]

The tai et level concept was introduced and developed by the Association of Finnish Manufacturers of Air Handling Equipment (AFMAHE) in 1985. - Indoor climate target levels have been utilized in the ventilation of public buildings, apartments, and offices for years. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health began to develop the concept for industrial ventilation in 1991.Tf The target level procedure for industrial air quality is described in more detail in Section 6.4. [Pg.359]

The target level procedure was applied to 16 common air contaminants (Table 6.19). These are common contaminants in the industrial environment, and in many cases are the most critical compounds from the viewpoint of need for control measures. The prevailing concentration data as well as the benchmark levels were taken from Nordic databases, mainly the Finnish sources, and described elsewhere. In addition, a general model for assessing target values for other contaminants is presented in the table. [Pg.402]
