In the future the Swedish formaldehyde rules may include other UF-bonded products as MDF-boards and the requirements also may be formulated as emission rates. On the behalf of the National Board of Physical Planning and Building, the Swedish National Testing Institute has performed a study on the emission from products bonded with formaldehyde based resin. The measurements have been performed in a ventilated test chamber at standardized climate in agreement within the work of the European Organization for Standardization, CEN. 16 West European countries are represented in CEN. 

The European organization for standards (Comite European de Normalisation-CEN) is considering a harmlessness test method based on polarizing steel embedded in a mortar, made with a cement with less than 5 % C3A, to +260 mV versus a saturated calomel electrode [39]. Admixtures would be tested to see if they gave detrimental effects (high currents, and corrosion damage on the bar) relative to a mortar without admixture. This method is still in committee at this time. 

More recently, international and national standards bodies, i.e. International Organization for Standardization (ISO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Japanese Standards Association (JIS) and European Organization for Standardization (EN), have developed definitions related to the degradation of plastics. Nowad s, ISO and ASTM standards exist describing in detail the pmposes of biodegradable and compostable . 

At the European level, the national organizations from both the EU (European Union, formerly the EEC) and the EETA (European Free Trade Association) are grouped in the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and its counterpart for the electrical industries CENELEC. The standards published by these two organizations have authority in all EU countries as well as the EFTA countries who have voted their approval, which means that these standards have replaced their corresponding national standards.

In 1980, the European Organization for Quality Control (EOQC as it was called then, now only EOQ) devoted its seminar in Geneva to validation of manufacturing processes. Since 1998, all medical devices marketed in Europe (EEA) must bear the CE mark, which signifies conformity to the essential requirements of the MDD. The MDD harmonized the European requirements along with device certification and the inspection procedures for manufacturers to ensure the highest degree of safety and product quality of the medical devices throughout the EC. Most important was the requirement for a full quality assurance system (Annex II of the MDD, 93/42/EEC), which included design controls for new medical device products. This was in line with the ISO 9000 series of standards established for quality systems by the International Organization for Standardization.

For the majority of the methods, the necessary quality assurance is provided by a combination of simple and robust sampling techniques with well-described sampling equipment, and the use of synthetic control samples for the chemical analyses. The methods defined in EMEP4 are harmonized whenever possible with recommendations in other networks such as WMO/GAW5 and standardization organizations such as the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). 

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) coordinates the publication of international standards. The European countries used to maintain their own national standards, but these are now being superseded by common European standards.
