Uugout canoes are used in northwestern Europe. Reed boats are developed in Mesopotamia and Egypt. [Pg.1241]

As a result, in the Holocene a clear pattern of climate-induced variation in 5 C values of plant material and in bone collagen exists across Emope (Van Klinken et al. 1994). Figures 3.1 and 3.2 show that wood and collagen values are closely correlated, demonstrating that the trend is passed on in the food chain. The trend of enrichment from northwestern to southern Europe correlates very strongly with the climatic pattern across Europe the climatic isotopic variability is on the order of 2 to 4%o. [Pg.42]

In this paper, I attempt to refine the predictable isotopic differences between collagen and carbonate that can be found in modem faunas from temperate and cold areas, using samples from Europe, Siberia and northwestern North America. Some of the results presented here have been published previously (Bocherens et a/. 1991a, 1991b, 1994, 1995a, 1995b, 1 6 Bocherens and Mariotti 1992 Fizet et al. 1995) but additional new data are reviewed as well in order to present a new synthesis. This should provide a framework that can be used to assess the quality of preservation of the isotopic signatures in Pleistocene mammal bones and teeth from these areas. [Pg.69]

It is normally found in southern and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Mediterranean, northwestern China, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. The natural reservoirs are ticks and numerous animal species. Animals (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, hares, hedgehogs) infected with this virus usually have no clinical symptoms or suffer only a mild illness. The hemorrhagic fever is highly pathogenic and notable for aerosol transmission. This is a biosafety level 4 agent. [Pg.539]

There is evidence for Cannabis use as early as 5,000 B.C. in Central Europe and there are probable references to it in the earliest writings of China and Egypt. The frozen tombs of the inhabitants of Siberia in about 500 B.C. have yielded quantities of seeds along with a variety of devices for burning them. A very hot, dry climate appears necessary for producing grass with high psychedelic activity, which may account for the failure to use Cannabis as an intoxicant in Northwestern Europe. ... [Pg.23]

De Voogt et al. [23] analysed marine and estuarine sediments from 22 sites in northwestern Europe (extending from Ireland and France to Norway and Sweden) by HPLC-FL. NP, OP, AgPEO and AgPEO concentration ranges of 0.1-17, highest levels were found in the estuaries of the rivers Seine, Mersey, Rhine/Meuse, Weser and Elbe. [Pg.761]

Because one of the major impacts of increased UV at the earth s surface is expected to be an increase in skin cancer, several countries now include UV forecasts as part of their weather reports (e.g., see Kerr, 1994), and estimates of skin cancer increases due to ozone depletion have been made. Figure 13.20, for example, shows the estimated number of excess cases of skin cancers for the United States and for northwestern Europe if no controls had been imposed on CFCs and halons and those expected with the Copenhagen Amendments (Slaper et al., 1996). Clearly, there is expected to be a major impact of the control strategies on the incidence of skin cancer, although the number of excess cases will still be about 33,000 per year in the United States and 14,000 per year in northwestern Europe at the projected worst-case year of 2050. [Pg.743]

Scholars have suggested several origins for the opium poppy, including southern Europe, Turkey, and northwestern Africa. Exactly when opium came into medicinal and recreational use is also uncertain however, it is clear that the cultivation of the plant and use of opium are ancient practices, dating to 4000 B.c. or even earlier. Poppy seeds and seed pods have been discovered... [Pg.387]

Extremely hot and dry weather was observed in the western Pacific, and SAT anomalies in central and northwestern Europe exceeded 5°C. [Pg.456]

Currently the primary commercial plant-derived sources for inulin are Jerusalem artichoke and chicory. The former is grown more so in Eastern Europe and the latter in Northwestern Europe. There is increasing interest in the commercial production of Jerusalem artichoke in China and several other countries. At present, neither crop is grown to any extent in the U.S., although there is some fresh-market production of Jerusalem artichoke. [Pg.65]

The sea-salt effect, which has been considered only as an episodic process, may also operate over decadal periods related to the NAO. The NAO is derived from the atmospheric pressure difference between the Azores and Iceland, and strongly affects winter temperatures and precipitation in regions bordering the North Atlantic (Hurrell, 1995 Jones et al., 2001). High winter NAO index values are associated with wet and warm, frontally dominated winter weather in northwestern Europe. Such periods coincide with more marine salt input and increasing chloride concentrations (Evans et al., 2001c). [Pg.4925]

The most important European subspecies are the western house mouse Mus musculus domesticus), found in northwestern Europe, and the northern house mouse Mus musculus musculus), found in eastern, northeastern, and southeastern Europe. While these subspecies of house mice originated in Europe, they quickly spread as Europeans moved to other parts of the globe. The western house mouse lives almost exclusively in houses or other manmade structures, while the northern house mouse spends part of the year outside. Both subspecies are descended from wild subspecies. [Pg.328]

The chukar (Alectoris chukar) is native to mountainous habitats of Europe and Asia. This species has been introduced as a gamebird to drier, open mountain habitats in southwestern Canada and the northwestern United States. [Pg.774]

P. avium (39) Originated in Europe. Grows wild as far as northern Persia, cultivated as far as northwestern Himalaya Wild cherry, sweet cherry. [Pg.390]

In addition, two other major efforts have been announced to develop coal gasification facilities in northwestern New Mexico. These proposed plants would be based on an extension of the Lurgi technology which has been used in Europe for many years. The first is a project proposed by El Paso Natural Gas Co., and the second is a proposal by a consortium composed of Pacific Lighting Service Co., Texas Eastern Transmission Corp., and Utah International, Inc. Each of these projects calls for the construction of one or more gasification plants, each capable of producing about 250 million cubic feet per day, and would utilize some of the extensive coal reserves of the area. [Pg.13]

Between 1922 and 1948, the Republic of Ireland emerged from union with the United Kingdom as of a series of quasi-independent states, including the Irish Free State and Eire. The Republic is located on the northwestern fringe of Europe in the Atlantic Ocean and covers 27,136 square miles. Its population in 1991 was 3.5 million. The climate is mild, due to the moderating influence of the prevailing warm, moist winds from the Atlantic. The mean winter temperature is approximately 14° C higher than that of places at the same latitude in the interior of Europe the mean summer temperature is approximately 4° C lower. [Pg.213]

Tegenaria agrestis (hobo spiders) are found in Europe and the Pacific Northwestern United States. T. agrestis is brown with gray markings and 10 mm in length. Hobo spiders are found in wood-piles, basements, and moist areas. [Pg.141]

One of Boise s anomalies is its bustling Basque population. Immigrating from a remote region in Northwestern Spain from 1910 to the mid-1970s, the Basques set up camp in Boise, forming the largest community of Basque peoples outside of Europe.
