Long Valley in east-central California, the Valles Caldera of north-central New Mexico, and the Yellowstone region of northwestern Wyoming. The sizes of these magma bodies may be in excess of 1000 km of fluid rock at temperatures in excess of 650°C. It has been estimated that only 2 km of magma could provide enough energy to operate a 1000-MW electric power plant for 30 years.

Sa.Ia.rs and Lakes. Brines having high lithium concentration are found in salars of northern Chile, southwestern Bohvia, and northwestern Argentina. Brines of lower lithium concentration are found in salars in the western United States and the Tibetan Plateau. Brines pumped from beneath the surface of the Salar de Atacama (Chile) and Silver Peak (Clayton Valley, Nevada) are used for commercial production of lithium uti1i2ing solar evaporation (see Chemicals frombrines). The concentration of selected ions in brines from salars and lakes of potential commercial interest worldwide are shown in Table 1. 

Deep-sea manganese nodules represent a significant potential mineral resource. Whereas the principal constituent of these deposits is manganese, the primary interest has come from the associated metals that the nodules can also contain (see Ocean rawmaterials). For example, metals can range from 0.01—2.0% nickel, 0.01—2.0% copper, and 0.01—2.25% cobalt (12). Recovery is considered an economic potential in the northwestern equatorial Pacific, and to a lesser degree in the southern and western Pacific and Indian Oceans (13—18). 

Later, more concentrated brines of the Midland, Michigan producers displaced the California producers. In 1976, Houston Chemicals began recovery using the blowing-out process from underground brines of the Anadarko Basin in northwestern Oklahoma. Annual capacity was 900 metric tons (38). In 1991, nearly all of the iodine produced was made from Oklahoma brines by a blowing-out process.

In 1964, two competing series of slender volumes appeared one, the Macmillan Series in Materials Science , came from Northwestern Morris Fine wrote a fine account of Phase Transformations in Comlen.ted Systems, accompanied by Marvin Wayman s Introduction to the Crystallography of Martensite Transformations and by Elementary Dislocation Theory, written by Johannes and Julia Weertman. The second series, edited at MIT by John Wulff, was entitled The Structure and Properties of Materials , and included slim volumes on Structure, Thermodynamics of Structure, Mechanical Behaviour and Electronic Properties.

Frank C. Whitmore (1887-1947) was born in North Attleboro. Massachusetts, and received his Ph.D. at Harvard working with E. L. Jackson. He was professor of chemistry at Minnesota, Northwestern, and the Pennsylvania State University. Nicknamed "Rocky," he wrote an influential advanced textbook in organic chemistry.
