Some legal products actually contain small amounts of illegal chemicals. All tests, including the GC/MS, will test you positive because the metabolites derived from the true positive are identical to the metabolites of the illegal drugs. One exception poppy seeds will not cause a positive GC/MS (explained below).

Spices and herbs can play an important indirect role in good nutrition. They are not high in nutrient values, but they help to increase the appeal and satisfaction of foods that are highly nutritious. Spices do contain fat, protein and carbohydrates, electrolytic minerals, iron and B vitamins, and others, but even the highest calorie spice, poppy seeds, contains only two to three calories per serving in normal use (12). 

The iaterpretation of forensic toxicology (18) results is often challenging. Courts frequently ask if an amount of dmg detected ia a specimen could cause a specific type of behavior, ie, would someone be under the influence of a dmg at a specific concentration, would a particular dmg concentration cause diminished capacity, or was the dmg the cause of death In a random employee dmg testing case, a worker screened positive for opiates by EMIT and gc/ms analysis of the urine specimen showed low levels of morphine. Although one possibiUty was that the iadividual was a heroia user, a review of foods eaten ia the prior 24 hours suggested a more innocent cause a poppy-seed bagel.

The ratio of palmitic acid to stearic acid (P/S) can be used to differentiate between drying oils, since these two saturated monocarboxylic acids are less subject to chemical reactions during treatment and ageing. Also, they have a similar chemical reactivity, so their ratio can be hypothesized to be relatively unaltered during ageing. The P/S ratio approach was pioneered by Mills [10], and has been subsequently adopted in a number of studies [7 9]. Typical values of the P/S ratio are 1 2 for linseed oil, 2 3 for walnut oil, 3 8 for poppy seed oil and 2.5 3.5 for egg. 

To identify the kind of oil, Keune et al. [2005] used the classical approach based on the palmitic acid/stearic acid (P/S) ratio usually obtained from GC/MS data. Ratios less than 2 correspond to linseed oil, whereas ratios higher than 5 correspond to poppy seed oil. Intermediate values can be attributed to walnut, poppy seed oil or mixtures [Schilliing and Khaijan 1996]. Keune et al. first show that ionization efficiency is the same for the two fatty acids in negative ion mode permitting the use of ToF-SIMS for the calculation of the P/S ratio. A test on the oil-paint model system shows a ratio of 2.0 for linseed oil and 3.6 for poppy seed oil, which can allow the two oils to be differentiated. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the ratio is not constant all over the cross-section. 

Poppy seeds and sesame seeds are sometimes added by applying them to the outside of the boiled bagel before baking. Other flavourings, e.g. onion, are mixed in to the dough.

The first extensively tested RES-specific contrast agent on the basis of iodinated lipids was EOE-13 with its precursors, AG 52-315 and AG 60-99. EOE-13 is an aqueous emulsion of the iodinated ester of poppy seed oil and is able to selectively enhance the normal liver and spleen parenchyma [10-12]. However, severe adverse events such as headache, fever and chills prevented further use of these contrast agents [13-15], although their extent could be decreased by hydrocortisone given prior to contrast injection. 

The basis for contrast agents derived from nutrional products was Intralipid, which had been prepared from phospholipids obtained from soy bean oil and egg yolk [86]. Intralipid was chemically modified by iodination into Intraiodol, which contained 50 mgl mbThe particles formed in the emulsion were mostly taken up by the hepatocytes and to a lesser extent by the RES [87,88]. Intraiodol was better tolerated than EOE-13 or its precursor, AG 60.99.
