Ethanol denaturated

What are some of the alternatives for this procedure Well, one can use NaOH (lye) in place of KOH but the yields will go down. Also, what about using denatured alcohol instead of pure ethanol Denatured alcohol is ethanol contaminated with 5-10% methanol. The methanol is there because it is poisonous and prevents people from using the ethanol for drinking. This means that places like the giant hardware stores can carry gallons of cheap contaminated ethanol as many of you have discovered. This product CAN be used. [Pg.40]

When used in products not licensed for drinking, ethanol usually occurs in the form of denatured alcohol, or specially denatured alcohol—alcohol that has been rendered unfit for drinking. You will often see SD alcohol mentioned on a label, sometimes followed by a number and letter, such as 40-B. This is the designation given by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to the denaturing method used. For example, SD-40 is ethanol denatured by adding tiny amounts of the most bitter-tasting substance known denatonium benzoate. [Pg.56]

A small change to lidocaine (adding a benzyl group) makes the molecule denatonium benzoate, the bitterest tasting substance known. It is used to denature alcohol—to make it unfit for drinking. Specially denatured alcohol 40, or SD-40, is ethanol denatured (made unfit for drinking) by a tiny amount denatonium benzoate. [Pg.174]

The checkers found 95% ethanol denatured with methanol to be a satisfactory substitute. [Pg.20]

A mixture of (R)-4-benzyl albuterol as a free base (3.2 g, 9.73 mmol) and 10% Pd/C (0.64 g) in 24 mL of ethanol (denatured with 5 vol % 2-propanol) is shaken on a Parr-hydrogenator under 50 psi of hydrogen at room temperature for 3 hours. The catalyst is removed by filtration and the filtrate is concentrated to ca. 9 mL in volume containing crude (R)-albuterol and treated with anhydrous HCI in ether (1.0 M, 9.5 mL, 0.98 eq) at 0°-5°C. After 30 min at room temperature, 9 mL of methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) is added, the resulting mixture is stirred at room temperature for 30 min and at 0°-5°C for 2 hours. The white solid (R)-albuterol hydrochloride is collected by filtration and recrystallized from 25 mL of ethanol and 12.5 mL of MTBE to give pure (R)-albuterol hydrochloride (2.17 g, 80.9% yield, 99.6% purity), white powder. [Pg.2029]

In order to ascertain the nature of the bound chromophore, the pigments can be hexane-washed at low temperature to eliminate excess unbound retinal, and the bound retinal can then be extracted by shaking with methylene chloride procedure [90] (Fig. 8), which denatures the protein but does not isomerize the chromophore. Another procedure in which isomerization of the chromophore is unlikely to occur used ethanol denaturation at 0°C to identify 1 l-cfs-retinal as the chromophore in rhodopsin [91]. [Pg.295]

Economic, political and social pressures have influenced the manufacture of ethanol since the fermentation process was introduced many years ago (see Chapter 1). In the nineteenth century its status as an industrial solvent was assured when industrial methylated spirit, which is ethanol denatured with methanol to make it unfit for human consumption, was freed from excise duty. In the twentieth century, the social and political pressures which provide economic support for agriculture have allowed fermentation to compete effectively with petrochemistry as a manufacturing process. The technical achievements in chemistry, biology and engineering have only facilitated the switch between carbohydrate and oil as feedstock for the process. [Pg.142]

Protein reagent stock solution 0.05% (w/v) Coomassie brilliant blue G-250, 23.8% (v/v) ethanol, 42.5% (w/v) phosphoric acid. To make 200 ml of stock solution (5000 determinations), dissolve 0.1 g Serva blue G in 50 ml 95% ethanol (denatured ethanol usually works as well), add 100 ml 85% phosphoric acid, and make up to 200 ml by adding water. The stock solution is commercially available (Bio-Rad). Keep at 4°C. [Pg.170]

The addition of 5 % methanol may be considered by authorities to be sufficient to denaturate ethanol. Ethanol denaturated with 5 % methanol is commonly used in cosmetics despite the fact that methanol (and also methylethylketone) is, according to the H-statements (see Sect. 26.3.2) considered to be too toxic when regularly applied to the skin of workers. [Pg.475]

An especially pure HA product for medical use, particularly for ophthalmology, was obtained in 1980 by Swedish company Pharmacia under the name Healon [4]. The production method includes the following stages. The grounded animal tissue was treated with 95% ethanol denaturated with chloroform for 24h. Treatment was repeated several times until the solution stayed colourless and transparent. Then HA was extracted with mixture of water and chloroform 20 1. The mixture was stirred and let to stay without stirring for 24h at 4-25°C, the mixture filtered, and the extraction repeated twice. Aqueous sodium chloride and chloroform 1 1 were added to combined extracts and a mixture was stirred for 3-5 h at 4-25°C. Then the mixture was kept until full fractions separated and organic fraction was isolated. The aqueous fraction was treated with hydrochloric acid till pH 4-5 and the equal volume of chloroform was added again. The procedure was repeated until the chloroform layer became transparent. [Pg.82]

Ethanol (EtOH) with a purity of 99.9 % (y/ ) was purchased from Bundesmo-nopolverwaltung fiir Branntwein (Germany) and acetone (Ac) with a purity of 99.9 % (vAr) from Sigma Aldrich as well as from Carl Roth (Germany). Technical ethanol denaturized with a purity of 98,8 % (v/v) was purchased from Prolabo (VWR, Germany). NMP with a purity of 99.8 % (v/ ) and DMSO with a purity of 99.5 % (v/v) were purchased from Carl Roth (Germany). AU solvents were used as delivered [1]. [Pg.991]
