Equipment improvements

Annual U.S. equipment purchases, including imports, have usually been about 5,000 injection machines, 1,500 extruders, and 1,000 blow-molding machines. Only about 10 percent of the U.S. machines use robots, compared to about 90 percent that use robots in Japan and other rather high percentages in different industrialized countries. [Pg.888]

To cope with the production of quite large parts, this unit incorporates multiaxis robots to demold and transport the molded part. The whole twin unit, which features a combined injection rate of 18 Ib./sec., is managed by a Unilog 90(X)B control system that made its debut at the 1989 Dusseldorf Plastics Fair. The mold alone weighs 127 t (140 tons) for the 1.5 m (2 yd. ) container, measures 305 x 153 x 216 cm (120 x 110 x 85 in.), and has an opening force of 545 t (600 tons). The top and bottom tie bars are 9h ft. apart and the side-to-side platen space is 18 ft. at a maximum mold thickness of 8i ft. [Pg.888]

The now-expanding approach of using telephone connections to unite the processor with the equipment supplier saves production downtime and cuts costs. Processors can now have their routine maintenance problems solved by the equipment suppliers technicians in a matter of minutes, without a technician s having to travel to the plant for a [Pg.888]

Although it is one of the oldest types of machinery for plastics processing, the single-screw extruder has not yet reached the end of its development—as can be seen in improvements over the past few years, based on the continuing industrial demand for improvements. Output, a major focus years ago, remains paramount but qualities such as wear and versatility are of equal importance. Improvements in all equipment are ongoing, with additional new developments occurring in injection molding machines (Chapter 2). [Pg.361]

There are many old machines in operation, particularly in the United States so there is ample room to improve and simplify plastics processing. In the United States it is estimated that about 80,000 injection molding machines, 12,000 extruders, and 6,000 blow molders are operating. For each type of machine, about 30 percent are under five years old, at least 35 percent are five to ten years old, and the rest are over ten years old. Present [Pg.361]

The initial step of production is carried out in a titanium reactor (34) because of the high corrosivity of maleic acid to most metals under the drastic reaction conditions used. The other steps are performed in stainless steel equipment. Improved purification processes for malic acid have been patented (37,38). [Pg.523]

Because high quaHty, low cost, and optimum performance are required for spray equipment, improved analytical and experimental tools are iadispensable for increasing productivity ia many competitive iadustries. In most iastances, it is no longer adequate to characterize a spray solely on the basis of flow rate and spray pattern. Information on droplet size, velocity, volume flux, and number density is often needed and can be determined usiag advanced laser diagnostic techniques. These improvements have benefited a wide spectmm of consumer and specialized iadustrial products. [Pg.327]

Mobile sources include railroad locomotives, marine vessels, aircraft, and automotive vehicles. Over the past 100 years, we have gained much experience in regulating smoke and odor emission from locomotives and marine craft. Methods of combustion equipment improvement, firefighter training, and smoke inspection for these purposes are well documented. This type of control is best at the local level. [Pg.423]

Investment costs represent a non-negligible part of the cost breakdown of crystalline modules and should be reduced while equipment improves in terms of standardization, energy consumption and optimized production volume. It is expected that specific investment costs will reduce from the M l-2 M W of current manufacturing facilities to less than M 0.5 MW in the long term, if the whole production chain from crystallization to module assembly is considered. [Pg.356]

There are other ways to reduce the need for in-process storage of hazardous intermediates. Fully understanding the causes of unreliability in production units is the key to reducing the need for in-process buffer tanks. Causes of shutdown can be eliminated by using more robust and reliable equipment, improving the process to... [Pg.488]

As the time resolution of the equipment improves and computer programs become available for data reduction, additional applications of the technique to heterogeneous catalysis can be expected. [Pg.127]

For the extraction process, the use of supercritical fluids extraction in adequate equipment improves the quality of the extraction. The most often used technique for separation is the chromatographic technique.196 HPLC... [Pg.54]

Because of the complexity of the GS process flow sheet, there are a number of opportunities for making improvements in the process that, taken together, should increase deuterium production, reduce the number of separate pieces of equipment, improve energy utilization, and reduce costs. U.S. work on improvements in the early 1960s was described by Proctor and Thayer [P4] and has been used in the first Canadian plants. Later improvements patented by Thayer [T3] have been considered for the newer Canadian plants. [Pg.789]

Equipment improvements of the coke drum include an overhead elliptical head instead of a spherical head, thus increasing the effective volume of the coke drum. The transition section between the skirt and shell connection uses a forged piece structure instead of overlay structure, thereby extending fatigue life. Alloy steel and cladding are used instead of carbon steel, thus improving corrosion resistance. [Pg.201]

An obvious limitation on the methods discussed in this review is the need for a choice of radical ion pairs with suitable ESR spectra. Actually, this limitation is due to the insufficient time resolution (quantum beats) or sensitivity (MARY-spectra) of available equipment. Improving these characteristics, one can obtain the spectral information about the systems with a more complex set of hyperfine interactions. Therefore, the further development of observation technique is an urgent task. [Pg.80]

The issues summarized below are just a few that are considered when choices are made about how to integrate additives with processing operation. There is no doubt that equipment improvements and larger market trends will make some of these issues more or less important for a given operation in the future. [Pg.238]

Outbreaks of fire were an everyday occurrence in Rome and led to the first known fire fighting organization, the Corps of VigUes. Devastating fires in early European cities led to equipment improvements. The introduction of fire engines and pumpers in the sixteenth century began to replace bucket brigades. These features make the wet ESP a device better than the dry ESP, and one may find the higher initial cost worth it due to the improved performance. The life of downstream equipment improves due to better removal of erosive, corrosive particulate matter lay the wet ESP. [Pg.131]

As the performance of electronic equipment improved, transformers kept pace with reduced distortion and broadened frequency response. Their physical size and weight, however, made them inconvenient for use in the ever shrinking chassis of transistorized equipment. As solid-state technology became standard, designers sought ways to eliminate transformers. The result was electronically (active) balanced inputs and outputs (I/O). [Pg.1698]
