If you do not take this approach, then your competitor will take the cost reduction approach. VA is not exclusively a cost-cutting discipline. With VA you literally can do it all that includes reduce cost, enhance quality, and/or boost productivity.

Flavoring substances can also be added to opium, including spices, sugar, and/or honey to disguise its bitter taste. It is also mixed into opium wine mixtures, some of which are called Yen Shee Suey. Dross, the residue remaining in the pipe after prepared opium has been smoked, may be mixed with raw opium. Re-using this dross is a cost-cutting measure in opium production. 

These structural cost disadvantages place Western players under increasing pressure. Beyond feedstock disadvantages, they also suffer from poor productivity improvements, having exhausted most of their cost-cutting options in the 1990s, expensive workforces, and subscale assets. This means they will have a hard time coping as the price-cost squeeze accelerates. 

The Spanish chemical industry was also faced with considerable difficulties. Short of innovations, it had developed through foreign technologies and had lived a sheltered life behind customs barriers and import licenses not conducive to cost cuts. Neither Spain s petrochemicals industry, which was in the hands of the Enpetrol state group and the private company CEPSA, nor the main national companies Explosivos de Rio Tinto (ERT) and Cros, were in a position to face without transition the pressure of competition felt when Spain joined the Common Market. This was particularly true of ERT, which had missed bankruptcy by a hair, and Cros, which had remained in the red for a long time. Neither would be able to avoid severe restructuring.

And the cost-cutting and uncertainty that inevitably accompany a merger can hurt staff morale as people await the ax. Milton Moskowitz, the pioneer in ranking best places to work, says one reason Merck keeps placing so high on these lists is that it has adamantly refused to merge. A rough estimate of how the chemical industry will develop in the near future reveals that, over the next decade, asset-leveraging changes will still be the bread and butter strategy. However, as mentioned above, we expect to see a parallel here with other mature industries, such as the automotive sector, where aU the cost-cutting and consoHdation in the world has not done a great deal to move share prices. Companies do need to create significant additional profits to maintain the level of profitability of 10 years ago in the future as well.
