The LT system was mobilized to the site after preparation of a detailed site specific Work Plan and Health and Safety Plan. An Air Permit was received from the Stanislaus County Air Resources Board. The soil was excavated from a 50 ft. by 50 ft. area. During treatment the treated soil was composited daily and analyzed using a Hanby Environmental Test Kit for petrolevim hydrocarbons. This simple test kit, which provides rapid soil analysis, was used as a means of process control. The processed soil operating temperature and retention time was optimized at 422°F and 22 minutes, respectively. The treated soil samples were collected and analyzed for TPH and BTEX s by an independent third party. The average of the 18 samples collected and analyzed using approved analytical techniques are provided on Table I. The treated soil exceeded the treatment criteria of 100 ppm total petrolevim hydrocarbons and 700 ppb toluene. [Pg.68]

ES-EPA (Expert System for Environmental Pollutant Analysis) is an expert system for producing laboratory test plans, including the appropriate sampling methods, pretreatments, test methods and their order. ES-EPA generates test plans in a stepwise manner from abstract plans called "templates" to detailed plans, using a hierarchical planning mechanism. The knowledge base contains information on analysis items, test methods, test equipment, pretreatments and other necessary information. The prototype system has been successfully tested for various cases in the domain. The development of a delivery version has been completed and it will soon be used in the field on a daily basis to further verify its feasibility. [Pg.201]

Using Environmental Examples to Teach About Acids. Acid-base reactions are usually presented to secondary students as examples of aqueous equilibrium (2). In their study of acids and bases, students are expected to master the characteristic properties and reactions. They are taught to test the acidity of solutions, identify familiar acids and label them as strong or weak. The ionic dissociation of water, the pH scale and some common reactions of acids are also included in high school chemistry. Plans are underway for a field test of a megawatt class fuel cell/gas turbine hybrid system on an Environmental Protection Agency site at Ft. Mead, Maryland.
