Environmental Issues. The mbber industry has responded to concerns about the environment by developing new product forms for accelerators and other chemicals which improve industrial hygiene and minimize worker exposure to these materials by eliminating dust exposure and improving handling ease. Another important benefit for newer product forms is better, more consistent quaHty mbber products resulting from improved factory practices. [Pg.242]

Created the Environment Agency (EAJ and the SEA for Scotland. Contains detailed provisions for dealing with a range of environmental issues including air quality contaminated land reinforcing the polluter pays principle water quality, with the EA empowered to require action to prevent water pollution and to require polluters to clean up after any pollution episode. [Pg.596]

Energy is a key issue and is closely associated with the environment. Global environmental issues must be addressed, where the energy chain from resources to end users is of vital importance. [Pg.2]

Provides scientific and technical support for the Federal Environment Ministry, especially with the preparation of legal and administrative regulations in the fields of air quality control, noise abatement, waste management, water resources management, soil conservation, environmental chemicals, and health-related environmental issues. [Pg.282]

At first PNL focused on nuclear technology and the environmental and health effects of radiation, but through the years expanded its mission to cover nearly every field of basic science to solve problems in the areas of environment, energy, and national security. Environmental issues and cleanup still encompass two-thirds of PNL work in the 1990s, but PNL has strengthened its role in regional electric power issues as well. [Pg.818]

We will not enlarge on the environment potential of biotechnology any further at this stage. We will, however, raise some environmental issues in later section of this text If you would like to learn more, we recommend the BIOTOL text "Biotechnological Innovations in Environmental and Eneigy Management". [Pg.8]

This is part of the environmental issues series of the UK Environment Agency. The report provides an overview of plastics looking at manufacture, uses and disposal. The aim of the report is to make recommendations on ways to ensure that society s use of plastics is more sustainable in the future. [Pg.33]

Performance requirements, environmental issues, and avaUabUity/cost of the material will mainly drive material requirement in the future. In order to face the huge tire wastage problem causing major hazards to the environment, future development in mbbery materials will be focused on development of thermoplastic polymer so that used polymer could be recovered by thermal treatment and separation, biological degradation by radiation/addition of chemical into the mbber compound that could be activated by exposure to radiation and development of biopolymer. [Pg.930]

The main environmental issue concerned with VOCs is their ability to form low-level ozone and smog through free radical air oxidation processes. The EPA has published a list detailing a number of adverse health effects, which are now thought to originate from the presence of VOCs in the environment, including ... [Pg.130]

The elucidation of actinide chemistry in solution is important for understanding actinide separation and for predicting actinide transport in the environment, particularly with respect to the safety of nuclear waste disposal.72,73 The uranyl CO + ion, for example, has received considerable interest because of its importance for environmental issues and its role as a computational benchmark system for higher actinides. Direct structural information on the coordination of uranyl in aqueous solution has been obtained mainly by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements,74-76 whereas X-ray scattering studies of uranium and actinide solutions are more rare.77 Various ab initio studies of uranyl and related molecules, with a polarizable continuum model to mimic the solvent environment and/or a number of explicit water molecules, have been performed.78-82 We have performed a structural investigation of the carbonate system of dioxouranyl (VI) and (V), [U02(C03)3]4- and [U02(C03)3]5- in water.83 This study showed that only minor geometrical rearrangements occur upon the one-electron reduction of [U02(C03)3]4- to [U02(C03)3]5-, which supports the reversibility of this reduction. [Pg.269]

A high proportion of the complex phenomena shown by emnlsions and foams, which are common when petroleum enters the environment, can be traced to these induced surface-tension effects. Dissolved gases, even hydrocarbon gases, lower the surface tension of oils, but the effects are less dramatic and the changes probably result from dilution. The matter is of some importance in environmental issues because the viscosity and surface tension of the petroleum govern the amount of oil that migrates or can be recovered under certain conditions. [Pg.48]

To combat any threat to the environment, it is necessary to understand the nature and magnitude of the problems involved. It is in such simations that environmental technology has a major role to play. Environmental issues even arise when outdated laws are taken to task. Thus, the concept of what seemed to be a good idea at the time the action occurred no longer holds when the law influences the environment. [Pg.133]
