Global environmental issues

Energy is a key issue and is closely associated with the environment. Global environmental issues must be addressed, where the energy chain from resources to end users is of vital importance. 

High school students should have a greater understanding of global environmental issues. This can be accomplished by using environmentally-relevant examples to teach high school chemistry. Appropriate demonstrations and laboratory experiments that illustrate these topics are suggested. To incorporate additional environmental chemistry in die secondary curriculum, help from environmental scientists will be needed. 

Support from Environmental Scientists. High school teachers need advice in selecting the most meaningful environmental examples, a list that may have to change every few years. Support from university and industrial chemists is also needed to encourage more school boards to approve modifying the present curriculum to incorporate global environmental issues.

Increased attention to both local and global environmental issues over the past few decades has resulted in heightened focns on these issues. This new attention has increased the workload, knowledge base, and responsibilities of environmental professionals. Issues ranging from the impact of pollution on human health, global climactic change, national security risks, and nuclear fuel processing pose serions concerns.

In 1997, Toyota Motor Company launched electric hybrid vehicles into the world market, followed by Nissan and Honda a few years later. They were very popular because of the good fuel economy and the increasing interest in global environmental issue. Therefore, all of the car manufacturers worldwide accelerated their research and development for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology. Although the batteries used for HEV by Toyota and Honda are nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries and they are major batteries in the field at present, the pressure for development is put on not Ni-MH but lithium because of the superior characteristics in power, weight, heat generation, and so on to Ni-MH.
