Plant layout and noise suppression material are two general noise abatement methods. Plant layout does not affect noise levels at any given point however, noise can be abated by screening off a section of the plant. An example of this is to orient cooling towers with their closed faces toward the critical location. This method must also consider wind direction to balance air draft. Tankage can be located to act as a noise screen. 

Noise control is worth mentioning. The turboexpander and axial compressors are noise producers and consideration must be given to the need for providing noise abatement. Silencers on vents and noise insulation housings on machines should be considered and have been proven effective.

That the requirements imposed by the notice are more onerous than those for the time being in force in relation to the noise to which the notice relates of (a) Any notice under Section 60 or 66 or (b) Any consent given under Section 61 or 6 or (c) Any determination made under Section 67. Local authorities are empowered by the Control of Pollution Act 1974 to designate areas as noise-abatement zones. Within these areas noise levels are measured and entered into a register. It is an offence to increase noise levels beyond register levels unless consent is obtained. If the local authorities are of the opinion that existing noise levels are too high, noise-reduction notices can be served. 

At a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the Director of the [British ] Noise Abatement Society reported that at a research center in Marseilles, France, an infrasound generator had been built which generated waves at 7Hz. He said that when the machine was tested, people in range were sick for hours. The machine could cause dizziness, nervous fatigue, seasickness , and even death up to 8km away (Ref6)...

The main apparent technical problems posed in relation with these types of potential noise barriers would be their noise abatement capability, structural performance, fire resistance, weatherability, chemical activity, and environmental effects. To assess the quality of new products of such materials, a series of mechanical, noise abatement, and flammability tests should be performed on a number of samples from the panels made of recycled rubber products. The primary function of these panels, i.e., their noise abatement capability is among the most important aspect of their performance. 

The motivation for this work and the ensuing request came from a tire-producing industry who intended to reuse the old tire products to do so, the plan was to produce ribbed panels made of recycled rubber which could be used in the noise abatement walls along the highways. A noise-abatement element was composed of a structural part and a non-structural waffle. The structural part was constituted of a ribbed composite panel. A typical ribbed panel had a dimension of 3000x620 mm in the thickness direction, the panels were longitudinally subdivided into three rectangular panels the border of which were stiffened with rubber ribs in intervals of about 900 mm the thickness of panels between the rubber stiffeners amounted to 40 mm the thickness of ribs was about 80 mm. 

Ribbed panels were to be vertically placed and would be longitudinally supported by steel profde members thus forming a noise-abatement wall system .

The goal of structural investigation was the laboratory simulation of behaviour of the noise abatement wall system composed of several 3 meter long rectangular panels under lateral wind loading these panels were enclosed in a load-bearing frame. 

Noise abatement tests were performed on a system composed of seven panels. To classify the combustability grade of the material, combustibility tests were performed on small samples of the recycled rubber material these tests were performed according to [3],...
