Environmental impact assessment program

The mine and production expansion and new refinery process is currently under focus on the Environmental Impact Assessment program which is expected to be ready in the beginning of 2013. Conceptual, basic and detail designs for the new refinery process has been under work for the last 2 years. 

The accomplishment of these objectives involved two different research grants Grant No. R 805 466010, "Collection and Treatment of Wastewater Generated by Pesticide Applicators", from the Oil and Hazardous Spills Branch, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and "Removal of Five R-PAR and Near R-Par Herbicides from Wastewater", from North Central Regional Pesticide Impact Assessment Program.

The National Environmental Policy Act requires that all legislation must consider environmental impact. Government agencies must prepare environmental impact assessments. The president must make an annual Environmental Quality Report to Congress, discussing current status and recent trends in the air, water, and terrestrial environments natural resources and government programs that have impacts on the environment. 

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an activity designed to identify and predict the impact of an action on the biogeophysical environment and on man s health and well-being, and to interpret and commimicate information about the impacts. An action is used in this chapter in the sense of any engineering project, legislative proposal, policy, program or operational procedure with environmental implications. 

Because of their volatility, most aliphatics occur at low or nondetectable levels in sediments. Consequently, there is generally little need to measure residues during monitoring and impact assessment programs except in cases of extreme pollution. Since hexachlorobutadiene has a relatively low vapor pressure, it has been found in sediments at a number of industrial sites. For example, residues of up to 920 [xg kg dry weight were reported for a landfill pond near the Mississippi River, whereas lower values ( 200 fig kg ) were found in the Mississippi Delta region (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1980). 

The results of the assessment are documented in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which discusses the beneficial and adverse impacts considered to result from the activity. The report is one component of the information upon which the decision maker ultimately makes a choice. A final decision can be made with due regard being paid to the likely consequences of adopting a particular course of action, and where necessary by introducing appropriate monitoring programs. 

Site characterization studies include a surface-based testing program, potential environmental impact, and societal aspects of the repository. Performance assessment considers both the engineered barriers and the geologic environment. Among features being studied are the normal water flow, some release of carbon-14, and abnormal events such as volcanic activity and human intmsion. The expected date for operation of the repository is 2013. 

The Texas Transportation Institute has just completed a very extensive two year FHWA sponsored program to look into other aspects of safety and environmental impact of sulfur-asphalt construction [53]. A number of typical sulfur-asphalt and sulfur-concrete paving systems were evaluated to assess their potential environmental impact and establish safety considerations relative to their formulation, construction and maintenance. The environmental impact was investigated from the formulation stages, through weathering, and included considerations of simulated fires and chemical spills. 

PANELIST BLOOM The same is true in the high-Btu gas demonstration plant program. An integral part of the work under the contract is the environmental assessment. There are about two tasks assigned to that. It started from the beginning of the contract period because we had to come in with a site. And it will lead, of course, to providing the information for the Environmental Impact Statement. 

The focus of this program was to evaluate the environmental impacts of the current standard material formulations and alternative formulations.95 The partnership used a life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach to examine the impacts of heat stabilizers, polymer systems, and flame-retardants used in insulation and jacketing for selected wire and cable products. The project began in March 2004 and the report was issued in May 2008.96... 

This act established the Department of the Environment and defined the responsibilities of the Minister of the Environment. The Minister was charged with establishing programs to protect the environment and reduce pollution, ensuring that new federal programs are assessed for environmental impact and reporting environmental information to the Canadian public. 

Environmental Assessment Tool for Organic Syntheses (EATOS), based on the environmental quotient, the computer program EATOS [57] can be used to compare and improve chemical reactions. It expands the EQ by considering the potential environmental impact (PEI) of both waste and reactants [58]. 

For regular tests a LIMS offers the functionality of automatic test programs that are used for processes, which can be planned exactly. Examples are calibration of instruments, audits, and assessment of environmental impact in regular intervals. After an automatic test program has been initiated, it starts working on a predefined relative date or time to compile and generate processes on the basis of the respective definitions in the standard.
