Electrical properties field-effect transistors

The success of CD CdS in photovoltaic cells has driven related research with potential applications in other semiconductor devices. Since the CD process seems to play a role in the favorable properties of the CdS windows by decreasing interface recombination, studies of its passivation properties on other interfaces and surfaces have been carried out, with considerable success. For example, when a very thin film (ca. 6 nm) was deposited between InP and SiOi, the resulting reduction of the interface state density led to improved electrical properties of metal-insulator-semiconductor capacitors and field effect transistors (FETs)... [Pg.90]

While the discussion in this chapter has focused on molecular layers on single crystal silicon surfaces, the attachment chemistries discussed here could easily be applied to functionalize silicon nanowires or nanoparticles. Silicon nanowires have been shown to exhibit interesting electrical transport characteristics and have been used to fabricate nanoscale pn junctions [95], field effect transistors [96] and biochemical sensors [97-100]. However, all these interesting phenomena have been reported on oxidized silicon nanowires. It is likely that better control over the surface properties, as could be achieved by employing some of the chemistry discussed here, could significantly improve the performance of these nanowire-based devices. From another perspective, silicon nanowires could prove extremely... [Pg.326]

Carbon nanotubes, especially SWNTs, with their fascinating electrical properties, dimensional proximity to biomacromolecules (e.g., DNA of 1 nm in size), and high sensitivity to surrounding environments, are ideal components in biosensors not only as electrodes for signal transmission but also as detectors for sensing biomolecules and biospecies. In terms of configuration and detection mechanism, biosensors based on carbon nanotubes may be divided into two categories electrochemical sensors and field effect transistor (FET) sensors. Since a number of recent reviews on the former have been published,6,62,63 our focus here is mostly on FET sensors. [Pg.209]

Ion-selective field-effect transistors (ISFETs) are ion sensors that combine the electric properties of gate-insulator field-effect transistors and the electrochemical properties of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). ISFETs have attracted much attention for clinical and biomedical fields because they could contain miniaturized multiple sensors and could be routinely used for continuous in vivo monitoring of biological fluid electrolytes (e.g., Na+, K+, Ca +, Cl", etc.) during surgical procedures or at the bedside of the patients in clinical cate unit (2). [Pg.250]

The electrical properties of the film were comparable to that of silicon dioxide films. Apparently, the obtained barrier aluminium oxide film can be seen as an excellent gate dielectric for organic field-effect transistors on flexible substrates. [Pg.511]
