Effect on Aging

Effects of a low dose of dietary resveratrol that partially mimics caloric restriction and retards aging parameters in mice were investigated [82]. Mice from middle age (14-months) to old age (30-months) were fed with control diet (84kcal/mouse/week), diet with low-dose trans-resveratrol (4.9mg/kg feed/day), or energy restricted (CR 63kcal/mouse/week) diet and their genome-vfide transcriptional profiles were evaluated. A transcriptional overlap of CR and resveratrol was found in the heart, skeletal muscle, and brain neocortex. Both dietary interventions inhibited gene expression 

The study [83] investigated whether resveratrol can improve nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and evaluated the possible mechanism. Rats fed a high-fat diet were treated with resveratrol and the liver histology was observed. Hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp was performed to assess insulin sensitivity. Fat accumulation was induced in FIepG2 cells, and the cells were treated with RSV. AMP-activated protein kinase phosphorylation levels were detected both in the animal study and cell study. Rats fed a high-fat diet developed abdominal obesity, NAFLD, and insulin resistance, which were markedly improved by 10 week.

The final variable to be mentioned here is the presence of impurities. These may be metallic fragments residual from Ziegler-type processes or they can be trace materials incorporated into the polymer chain. Such impurities as catalyst fragments and carbonyl groups incorporated into the chain can have a serious adverse influence on the power factor of the polymer, whilst in other instances impurities can have an effect on aging behaviour.

The oil companies supplying the rubber industry claim that there is no effect on ageing properties when sulphur is present in an oil (up to 6% is possible). They claim that the refining removes the active mercaptans and sulphides and the remainder of the sulphur is complexed into polycyclic compounds and there is no evidence that this type of sulphur has any effect on cure. This claim may be true in some circumstances. However, it is known from practical experience that with certain polymers and compounds the claim is incorrect, especially when the high sulphur oils are used as test media. Oils supplied to the same oil specification from oil fields in different parts of the world, and meeting all the requirements of the specification may, because of widely different sulphur levels, have serious effects on high temperature ageing.

While a clear causitive role has been established for PMCA2 in hearing loss, further studies on hypomorphic alleles could address their effect on age-related or noise-induced hearing loss. Generating a mouse model of the human V586M mutation should provide an even less affected hypomorph for further studies.

Although there is little question that glycosylated proteins increase with age, there is no direct evidence that they affect the life span. Nevertheless, this important area needs further study in order to more fully understand its effects on aging and disease. 

Specific effects on AGE, the excess Gibbs free energy, are expected in tetraethyl ammonium bromide (as compared with ammonium bromide), because of the presence of alkyl chains as substituents. The equation needed to calculate AGE is given by... 

The Tufts research shows that a fruit diet including polyphenols from dark berries appears to positively impact learning and memory in aged rats, possibly due to a direct effect on aging neurons, cell-to-cell signaling, and neuronal calcium buffering.

There are other factors that can have an adverse effect on aging. Such factors as elevated temperature, dynamic forces, contact with chemical agents, or any combination of these factors will lead to a loss in physical and mechanical properties.
