I will consider some of these differences later at this stage I want to present in ideal-typical categories the opinion and attitude themes about the Mods and Rockers as they appeared in the mass media and other public forms. These themes derive from all the opinion statements by the media (editorials, articles, cartoons), in the media (letters, quotations from speeches, statements, sermons, etc.) and in other public arenas such as parliamentary and council debates. What follows is by no means a catalogue of all types of opinions that were expressed some were too idiosyncratic and bizarre to classify. These are just the themes which emerged with sufficient regularity to justify thinking that they were fairly widespread and would have some effect on public opinion as a whole. [Pg.49]

Tbe SbrUing Mining Review (1981). in an editorial article, reported on tbe pumping of taconite tailings using 20 in x 18 in (500 mm x 450 mm) Warman tailings pumps sized to a pressure of 350 psi. The pumps were installed in six stages. [Pg.547]

An accompanying editorial article in the same issue of Nature shows less, if any, reservation concerning the identification of the images obtained with textbook orbitals. The headline caption for the editorial begins. [Pg.202]

Before discussing the problems of control laboratories, it is important to have a clear picture of the revolutionary changes which have been, and still are, taking place in the field of analytical chemistry. One has only to observe the recent issues of Analytical Chemistry, noting especially the editorials of Murphy (14) and the articles of Muller (13), to recognize the trend away from the classical gravimetric and volumetric methods of 20 years ago. [Pg.68]

With the publication of Vol. 51 we should also like to refer to editorial policy this series publishes invited, critical review articles of new developments in all areas of Polymer Science in English (authors may naturally also include works of their own). The responsible editor, that means the editor who has invited the article, discusses the scope of the review with the author on the basis of a tentative outline which the author is asked to provide. Author and editor are responsible for the scientific quality of the contribution the editor s name appears at the end of it. Manuscripts must be submitted, in content, language and form satisfactory, to Springer-Verlag. Figures and formulas should be reproducible. To meet readers wishes, the publisher adds to each volume a volume index which approximately characterizes the content. [Pg.228]

The results obtained by Garcia Gonzalez and his coworkers attracted interest abroad, and it was a source of great satisfaction for him to receive, in 1953, an invitation from Professor M. L. Wolfrom to write the first of his articles in this Series. A further international recognition as a carbohydrate chemist ensued in 1965, when he was invited to serve as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the new international journal Carbohydrate Research. In 1975, he was asked to contribute with a lecture, subsequently published, on Synthesis of Polyhydroxyalkyl Heterocycles, to a Symposium on New Synthetic Methods for Carbohydrates organized by the American Chemical Society to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Society (New York, 1976). [Pg.15]

Robert A. Bethem, ALTA Analytical Laboratory, developed the analytical method for the determination of acetanilide metabolites in water. The authors gratefully acknowledge Sharon J. Moran, Michael J. Miller, and David I. Gustafson of Monsanto Company for reading and reviewing this article, and Theresa M. Bix for editorial assistance. [Pg.387]

Larry Brewer, who coordinated the collection of much of the data presented in the case studies presented in this article. This study could not have been completed without the efforts of Michael Stephens, Fran Harper, Ron Mellot and Chuck Crabtree, and the analytical and ecotoxicology team members, who are too numerous to name individually. Land-owner cooperation was also essential in conducting this smdy. Their efforts are gratefully acknowledged. The authors also thank Aldos Barefoot for critical editorial input and encouragement during preparation of the manuscript. [Pg.957]

There seems to be considerable reluctance in some parts of the medical community to acknowledge the benefits of exercise in the treatment of depression. One meta-analysis of clinical trials showed that physical exercise was as effective as psychotherapy or antidepressant medication and much better than no treatment. But the authors concluded that the effectiveness of exercise in reducing symptoms of depression cannot be determined ,45 and the editors of the journal introduced the article with an editorial comment entitled effectiveness of exercise in managing depression is not shown by meta-analysis .46 Why not Because there were flaws in the way many of the studies had been designed. To be fair, there were indeed shortcomings in the studies, but these shortcomings also characterize clinical trials of antidepressants.47 If clinical trials like these do not establish the effectiveness of physical exercise as a treatment for depression, neither do they establish the effectiveness of antidepressants. [Pg.172]

After discussing this between ourselves, we decided that we have reached a point where it is worthwhile to present our readers with a complete set of the chemometrics writings published to date. Those of you who have been reading our work for a long time will recall that the column series Chemometrics in Spectroscopy is a continuation of our previous column series, Statistics in Spectroscopy . Statistics in Spectroscopy was published from 1986 to 1992, with some preliminary articles in 1985. The columns from the earlier series, Statistics in Spectroscopy , have been collected and published in their entirety as a book (with minor editorial changes appropriate to the change in format from a series of columns to a book) of the same name, now in its second edition. So much for the past what about the discussion ... [Pg.117]

I am fortunate in having been able to enlist the help and guidance of an international board of editorial advisors who have provided great assistance by suggesting chapter topics and suitable authors for articles both here and in future volumes. While I am grateful for the assistance of this editorial advisory board, it is the editor and the authors who are solely responsible for any shortcomings of Topics in Stereochemistry. [Pg.612]

The editorial policy of the publication will continue in its past form. To quote from Volume I It is our plan to have the individual contributors furnish critical, integrating reviews rather than mere literature surveys, and to have the articles presented in such a form as to be intelligible to the average chemist rather than only to the specialist. Invitations will be extended to selected research workers to prepare critical reviews of special topics in the broad field of the carbohydrates, including the sugars, polysaccharides and glycosides. It is also the intention to include biochemical and analytical developments in the carbohydrate field as well as critical reviews of important industrial advances. [Pg.8]

Tipson s long-standing interest in sulfonic esters led him to contribute a landmark article on carbohydrate sulfonates for Volume 8 of Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry, which marked the start of his editorial involvement with the series he joined as assistant editor to M. L. Wolfrom starting with Volume 9. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful association between Wolfrom and Tipson that assured researchers in the carbohydrate field of a regular series of authoritative articles on a wide range of topics, both fundamental and applied, related to carbohydrates. [Pg.424]

Dr. Mark is acknowledged throughout the scientific community as the father of polymer science. He received the National Medal of Science in 1980, the 1978 Senior U.S. Scientist Award, 29 other medals and awards from various international organizations, and 17 honorary degrees. In 1977, he was appointed as an Honorable Member of the Japan Chemical Society. He has published over 500 original and review articles and some 20 books on topics related to polymer chemistry. Dr. Mark is founder and first editor of the Journal of Polymer Science, the definitive publication in its field, and is currently editor of the Journal of Applied Science and associate editor of the Textile Research Journal. In addition to these duties he serves as Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology. [Pg.5]

Volume 1 of Advances in Photochemistry appeared in 1963. The stated purpose of the series was to explore the frontiers of photochemistry through the medium of chapters written by pioneers who are experts. The editorial policy has always been to solicit articles from scientists who have strong personal points of view, while encouraging critical discussions and evaluations of existing data. In no sense have the articles been simply literature surveys, although in some cases they may have also fulfilled that purpose. [Pg.7]
