The equipment can be made in a wide range of sizes, from about 10 mm diameter to in excess of 2 m diameter. Operating speeds are effective from a fraction of a r/min to over 500 r/min, although most duties employ screw speeds in the range of 20-100 r/min. This variable capacity is used to control transfer rates hence many metering duties are undertaken with helical screw devices. [Pg.5]

HammerMills. One of the most versatile, economical, and widely used impact mills is the hammer mill (Fig. 12). Many variations are produced, with special types available for specialized appHcations, eg, quick screen change for animal feed, heavy duty for minerals, and light constmctions for woodchip. The principle employed is similar to that of the impact cmsher however, the rotation speed can vary from 20 up to 100 m/s with high speed fine-grinding versions. The oudet screen is used to vary the residence time, which in turn affects final particle size. The size of the end product is an order of magnitude finer than the size of the perforations in the outlet screen. [Pg.144]

Based on dryer cost alone, indirect-heat dryers are more expensive to build and install than direct-heat dryers designed for the same duty. As environmental concerns and resulting restrictions on process emissions increase, however, indirect-heat dryers are more attractive because they employ purge gas only to remove vapor and not to transport heat as well. Dust and vapor recovery systems for indirect-heat dryers are smaller and less cosdy to supply heat for drying, gas throughput in direct-heat dryers is 3—10 kg/kg of water evaporated indirect-heat dryers require only 1—1.5 kg/kg of vapor removed. System costs vary directly with size, so whereas more money may be spent for the dryer, much more is saved in recovery costs. Wet scmbbers ate employed for dust recovery on indirect-heat dryers because dryer exit gas usually is close to saturation. Where dry systems are employed, all external surfaces must be insulated and traced to prevent vapor condensation inside. [Pg.253]

The heavy-duty jacketed type (Fig. ll-62a) is a special custom-built adaptation of a heavy-duty vibratory conveyor shown in Fig. 11-60. Its apphcation is continuously to cool the crushed materi [from about 177°C (350°F)] produced by the vibratoiy-type caster of Fig. 11-53. It does not have the liqmd dam and is made in longer lengths that employ L, switchback, and S arrangements on one floor. The capacity rate is 27,200 to 31,700 kg/h (30 to 35 tons/h) with heat-transfer coefficients in the order of 142 to 170 W/(m °C) [25 to 30 Btii/(h ft °F)]. For heating or drying applications, it employs steam to 414 kPa (60 IbFin ). [Pg.1096]

Continuous Furnaces Continuous furnaces are employed for the same general duties cited for batch furnaces. Units are gas, oil, or electrically heated and utihze direct circulation of combustion gases or muffles for heat transfer. Continuous furnaces frequently have an extension added for cooling the charge before exposure to atmospheric air. [Pg.1197]

The resistance units, when used only for starting purpose, are in the circuit for only a short time and are thus short-time rated. However, when they are employed for speed control, braking or plugging operations, in addition to the starting duty, they may be rated for continuous duty. For loads with fast variations, this type of a modified version too may be sluggish, due to step-by-step tuning.
