Dimethyl formation

Methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and dimethyl formate. Under the experimental conditions, neither formic acid nor its esters were detected. The other primary alcohols are oxidized to give aldehydes and, in a subsequent reaction, carboxylic acids. Acetals and esters are also formed. Profiles of the reaction products in the oxidation of l-propanol are shown in Fig. 19. [Pg.299]

The pentalenene precursor (141) can be derived firom a TMM cycloadduct (142) (equation 147). This synthetic approach is expedited by the facile conversion of the methylene unit of (142) to a gem-di-methyl function found in (141). This is normally accomplished by a simple cyclopropanation-hydro-genolysis sequence. The two reported TMM-based syntheses of the linear triquinane (l)-hirsutene (143) also utilize this particular strategy for the gem-dimethyl formation (equation 148). ""... [Pg.310]

Other compounds containing lone pairs of electrons readily form co-ordinate links and in each case a change in spatial configuration accompanies the bond formation. The oxygen atom in dimethyl ether, CHj—O—CHj, has two lone pairs of electrons and is able to donate one pair to, for example, boron trichloride ... [Pg.41]

The conventional electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide tends to give formic acid as the major product, which can be obtained with a 90% current efficiency using, for example, indium, tin, or mercury cathodes. Being able to convert CO2 initially to formates or formaldehyde is in itself significant. In our direct oxidation liquid feed fuel cell, varied oxygenates such as formaldehyde, formic acid and methyl formate, dimethoxymethane, trimethoxymethane, trioxane, and dimethyl carbonate are all useful fuels. At the same time, they can also be readily reduced further to methyl alcohol by varied chemical or enzymatic processes. [Pg.220]

Davies and Warren" found that when 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene was treated with nitric acid in acetic anhydride, and the mixture was quenched after 34 hr, a pale yellow solid with an ultraviolet spectrum similar to that of a-nitro-naphthalene was produced. However, if the mixture was allowed to stand for 5 days, the product was i-methyl-4 nitromethylnaphthalene, in agreement with earlier findings. Davies and Warren suggested that the intermediate was 1,4-dimethyl-5 nitronaphthalene, which underwent acid catalysed rearrangement to the final product. Robinson pointed out that this is improbable, and suggested an alternative structure (iv) for the intermediate, together with a scheme for its formation from an adduct (ill) (analogous to l above) and its subsequent decomposition to the observed product. [Pg.222]

The formation of the above anions ("enolate type) depend on equilibria between the carbon compounds, the base, and the solvent. To ensure a substantial concentration of the anionic synthons in solution the pA" of both the conjugated acid of the base and of the solvent must be higher than the pAT -value of the carbon compound. Alkali hydroxides in water (p/T, 16), alkoxides in the corresponding alcohols (pAT, 20), sodium amide in liquid ammonia (pATj 35), dimsyl sodium in dimethyl sulfoxide (pAT, = 35), sodium hydride, lithium amides, or lithium alkyls in ether or hydrocarbon solvents (pAT, > 40) are common combinations used in synthesis. Sometimes the bases (e.g. methoxides, amides, lithium alkyls) react as nucleophiles, in other words they do not abstract a proton, but their anion undergoes addition and substitution reactions with the carbon compound. If such is the case, sterically hindered bases are employed. A few examples are given below (H.O. House, 1972 I. Kuwajima, 1976). [Pg.10]

As an application of maleate formation, the carbonylation of silylated 3-butyn-l-ol affords the 7-butyrolactone 539[482], Oxidative carbonylation is possible via mercuration of alkynes and subsequent Lransmetallation with Pd(II) under a CO atmosphere. For example, chloromercuration of propargyl alcohol and treatment with PdCF (1 equiv.) under 1 atm of CO in THF produced the /3-chlorobutenolide 540 in 96% yield[483]. Dimethyl phenylinale-ate is obtained by the reaction of phenylacetylene, CO, PdCU, and HgCl2 in MeOH[484,485]. [Pg.100]

Allenes also react with aryl and alkenyl halides, or triflates, and the 7r-allyl-palladium intermediates are trapped with carbon nucleophiles. The formation of 283 with malonate is an example[186]. The steroid skeleton 287 has been constructed by two-step reactions of allene with the enol trillate 284, followed by trapping with 2-methyl-l,3-cyclopentanedione (285) to give 286[187]. The inter- and intramolecular reactions of dimethyl 2,3-butenylmalonate (288) with iodobenzene afford the 3-cyclopentenedicarboxylate 289 as a main product) 188]. [Pg.167]

The first report on the Pd(II)-promoted Cope rearrangement is the conversion of fw./ra/w-l,5-cyclodecadiene (44) into c/5-l,2-divinylcyclohexane-PdCl2 complex (45) with a stoichiometric amount of PdCl2(PhCN)2 at room temperature. The complex formation is the driving force of this unusual rearrangement [38,39]. A similar transformation of germacrane (l,5-dimethyl-8-isopropyli-dene-/rfflu,/ra j-l,5-cyclodecadiene) takes place[40j. [Pg.533]

Goto et al. (386) have qualitatively studied the relationship between the structure and the ease of formation of some 2-aryl- and 2-heteroaryl-A-2-thiazolin-4-one derivatives. It is found that 2-pyridyI, 2-benzimidazoyl, and 2- 6 hydroxy-5 -methyl)-benzothiazolyl derivatives are too unstable to be isolated. 6 -Hydroxy-, 6 -methyl-, and unsubstituted 2-benzothiazoiyl derivatives, as well as naphtothiazolyl derivatives are unstable but isolable. On the other hand, 6 -methoxy-. 6 -acetoxy-. and 5, 7 -dimethyl-6 -hvdroxybenzothiazolyl derivatives as well as most of their 5-methyl substituted derivatives are stable and easily prepared. [Pg.420]

Treatment of 192 with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate yields a thiophene derivative (195) when R = Ph and a 2-p3Tidone (1S>6) derivative when R = H (Scheme 100). The proposed mechanism involves the formation of a mesoionic derivative (193) initially further dipolar addition yields adduct 194, the decomposition of which is dependent on the R substituent as described for related compounds (435). ... [Pg.426]

The relative amounts of the two products however are not equal more as 1 2 dimethyl cyclohexane is formed than trans The reason for this is that it is the less hindered face of the double bond that approaches the catalyst surface and is the face to which hydro gen IS transferred Hydrogenation of 2 methyl(methylene)cyclohexane occurs preferen tially at the side of the double bond opposite that of the methyl group and leads to a faster rate of formation of the cis stereoisomer of the product... [Pg.309]

The reaction mechanism and rates of methyl acetate carbonylation are not fully understood. In the nickel-cataly2ed reaction, rate constants for formation of methyl acetate from methanol, formation of dimethyl ether, and carbonylation of dimethyl ether have been reported, as well as their sensitivity to partial pressure of the reactants (32). For the rhodium chloride [10049-07-7] cataly2ed reaction, methyl acetate carbonylation is considered to go through formation of ethyUdene diacetate (33) ... [Pg.77]

Mobil MTG and MTO Process. Methanol from any source can be converted to gasoline range hydrocarbons using the Mobil MTG process. This process takes advantage of the shape selective activity of ZSM-5 zeoHte catalyst to limit the size of hydrocarbons in the product. The pore size and cavity dimensions favor the production of C-5—C-10 hydrocarbons. The first step in the conversion is the acid-catalyzed dehydration of methanol to form dimethyl ether. The ether subsequendy is converted to light olefins, then heavier olefins, paraffins, and aromatics. In practice the ether formation and hydrocarbon formation reactions may be performed in separate stages to faciHtate heat removal. [Pg.165]

Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid is miscible in all proportions with water and is soluble in many polar organic solvents such as dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and acetonitrile. In addition, it is soluble in alcohols, ketones, ethers, and esters, but these generally are not suitably inert solvents. The acid reacts with ethyl ether to give a colorless, Hquid oxonium complex, which on further heating gives the ethyl ester and ethylene. Reaction with ethanol gives the ester, but in addition dehydration and ether formation occurs. [Pg.315]

Technora. In 1985, Teijin Ltd. introduced Technora fiber, previously known as HM-50, into the high performance fiber market. Technora is based on the 1 1 copolyterephthalamide of 3,4 -diaminodiphenyl ether and/ -phenylenediamine (8). Technora is a whoUy aromatic copolyamide of PPT, modified with a crankshaft-shaped comonomer, which results in the formation of isotropic solutions that then become anisotropic during the shear alignment during spinning. The polymer is synthesized by the low temperature polymerization of/ -phenylenediamine, 3,4 -diaminophenyl ether, and terephthaloyl chloride in an amide solvent containing a small amount of an alkaU salt. Calcium chloride or lithium chloride is used as the alkaU salt. The solvents used are hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA), A/-methyl-2-pyrrohdinone (NMP), and dimethyl acetamide (DMAc). The stmcture of Technora is as follows ... [Pg.66]
