It is used in IC systems when the amperometric process confers selectivity to the determination of the analytes. The operative modes employed in the amperometric techniques for detection in flow systems include those at (1) constant potential, where the current is measured in continuous mode, (2) at pulsed potential with sampling of the current at dehned periods of time (pulsed amperometry, PAD), or (3) at pulsed potential with integration of the current at defined periods of time (integrated pulsed amperometry, IPAD). Amperometric techniques are successfully employed for the determination of carbohydrates, catecholamines, phenols, cyanide, iodide, amines, etc., even if, for optimal detection, it is often required to change the mobile-phase conditions. This is the case of the detection of biogenic amines separated by cation-exchange in acidic eluent and detected by IPAD at the Au electrode after the post-column addition of a pH modiher (NaOH) [262]. 

A unique micro integration methodology has been shown for a wide variety of chemical systems. The methodology comprises MUOs, CFCP, and TLM. Some of its applications, which were hardly realized with conventional microsystems based on electrophoresis and LIF detection, were explained with examples. All these examples proved that micro chemical systems drastically reduce chemical processing time and improves efficiency. The micro chemical systems are concluded to be promising as flexible, smart, and mobile advanced chemical systems in near-future chemical technology.

The army has recently fielded two new systems, the FOX and the Biological Integrated Detection System (BIDS), which are discussed below. Each of these new systems integrates a variety of detectors into a mobile, crew-served system the composite detectors are vastly superior to any individual detector previously available.

Individual agent detection instruments have limited utility, especially outside a laboratory. To be fully useful, field instruments need to be integrated into a suite of instruments and deployed as a measurement system with automated sample acquisition, instrument control and data acquisition, quality assurance, analysis, transmission and archiving capabilities. Laboratory instruments may not need to be as fully integrated. Agent-detection instrument suites may be deployed at fixed sites or on mobile platforms, including ground vehicles, ships, and piloted or unmanned aircraft. 

Integration of several chromatographic and detection systems into a single instrument is now feasible at the research laboratory level. The commercial availability of such systems is only a matter of several years away. Already, various coniputer-assisted procedures can be employed to simultaneously run multiple equipment systems, change columns or adjust the composition of mobile phase eluents, while concurrently optimizing the resolution, peak spectral scanning, or delivering the peak effluent to a second, third,. .. detector as a...
