Their structure and composition could be compatible with integrated detection systems, when used in solid phase spectroscopic measurements. 

The equipment required to develop this type of sensor is very simple and resembles closely that used to implement ordinary liquid-solid separations in FI manifolds. The only difference lies in the replacement of the packed reactor located in the transport-reaction zone with a packed (usually photometric or fluorimetric) flow-cell accommodated in the detector. Whether the packing material is inert or active, it should meet the following requirements (a) its particle diameter should be large enough (< 80-100 fim) to avoid overpressure (b) it should be made of a material compatible with the nature of the integrated detection system e.g. almost transparent for absorbance measurements) and, (c) the retention/elution process should be fast enough to avoid kinetic problems. 

In 1993, the incidence of antimicrobials in car tanker milk and the suitability of different tests for the detection of antimicrobials on the MRL level has been examined in Northern Germany using an integrated detection system (14). This system comprised microbial inhibitor tests for screening, immunochemical tests for preliminary confirmation, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for final confirmation either in a parallel or a subsequent fashion in case of positive or questionable screening results.

The army has recently fielded two new systems, the FOX and the Biological Integrated Detection System (BIDS), which are discussed below. Future work may focus on the design of more selective and sensitive nanostructured interface at an atomic level by combining computational and experiments. For example, metal oxides nanocrystals exposed with different crystal facets which can selectively adsorb a specific metal ion can be computational screened and synthesized. In addition, issues related to the reproducibility and stability in the more complex environments need great investigation prior to the application in real samples. Furthermore, the developments of highly integrated detection system which can even ensure online analysis are highly expected.
