Desktop effect

For this experiment, as well as for the microtomography ( 3.2) we used the commercial desktop microtomography system Skyscan 1072 [5], the setup of which is sketched in Figure 1. For this instrument, which is designed to study relatively large objects with a diameter up to 50 mm, the source size is 8 pm, the distance source-detector is about 50 cm and the effective resolution of the detector is about 80 pm. For this system and this object, the global effective resolution a is estimated to be of the order of 50 to 100 pm [6]. [Pg.576]

The recent introduction of inexpensive desktop computers has allowed their extensive use throughout many companies. The standard spreadsheet packages which accompany these machines enables the above data to be laid out in an interactive way, so that what if situations can be explored at the planning stage and the implications of, for example, market trends in the food industry, to be examined over the long term for its effect on the plant layout. The model may include a factor to take into account improvements in technology and working practices in both the office and factory. [Pg.72]

We should not minimize the effects that electronic searching of patents has had on the business of research. In 1990, CAS introduced MARPAT, which is a database of Markush (generic) structures found in patent documents [1]. This database provided a valuable tool for patent searching in a more comprehensive way than had been available previously. In 1995, CAS launched SciFinder, which provided access to the patent literature for chemists on their desktops. Using the SciFinder interface, one may search for research topics, authors, companies, or structures/reactions. From a practical viewpoint, SciFinder did more to enhance the searching capabilities of the medicinal chemist than any other tool. Even today, SciFinder continues to provide a first pass through the patent literature when chemists want to include patents in their searching. Indeed, when a search is performed, patent references are included in the answer set. Only very recently have there been additional tools to search the patent literature that have found widespread use. [Pg.303]

A lot of technology is required to achieve effective federation of disparate information sources. The Cabinet design is such that the computer does a tremendous amount of data processing to deliver a simple and powerful interface to the user. This is contrary to traditional database design that focuses on processing efficiency at the cost of flexibility and simplicity. Fortunately, current computers are more than adequate to do this job well. By the standards of the last few years, current desktop computers are supercomputers (and they are stiU getting faster and more capable each year). [Pg.267]

Bob wants to tear out the benches, sinks, and hood in our central work room and replace them with office furniture to better accommodate our burgeoning staff of junior associates, their desks, their file cabinets, and desktop computers. Knowing how much more expensive, hence valuable, wet lab space is than dry, I am resisting this change vigorously even as the pressure mounts. Bob says, Just cut off the pipes and cap them, when I ask how he intends to effect the change. [Pg.59]

The third element is to consolidate service offerings into highly standardized infrastructure products. Once service offerings are stable and the organization is bundled, internal operations can be standardized. The objective of service standardization is to improve stability by reducing the number of technical platforms, and to reduce engineering and deployment costs as the products are built only once. The effects of this can be seen with the introduction of limited desktop profiles for all employees or the standardization of server platforms/services (one Unix, one Linux, one Windows). Drastic standardization is necessary as cost does not scale down in line with complexity reduction. As described in the previous two elements, environments that require high flexibility are not suited to this level of service standardization. [Pg.301]

Birefringences are mostly observed in condensed phases, especially pure liquids or solutions, since the strong enhancement of the effects allows for reduced dimensions (much shorter optical paths) of the experimental apparatus. Nowadays measurements of linear birefringences can be carried out on liquid samples with desktop-size instruments. Such measurements may yield information on the molecular properties, molecular multipoles and their polarizabilities. In some instances, for example KE, CME and BE, measurements (in particular of their temperature dependence) have been carried out simultaneously on some systems. From the combination of data, information on electric dipole polarizabilities, dipole and quadrupole moments, magnetizabilities and higher order properties were then obtained. [Pg.255]

For facilities and communities just beginning to test their plans, desktop or simulated drills are effective for identifying procedural problems that need to be corrected before they proceed to full-scale drills. In these simulations, staffing of the appropriate emergency center would occur, but the emergency service groups would not actually mobilize at the scene of the incident. [Pg.169]

Figure 5 shows the effect of the dopant cerium on the spectral power distribution (SPD) of a typical cool-white fluorescent lamp. This dopant has been useful in reducing UV emissions from the emissions of household quartz, halogen, and other lamps, particularly the desktop variety. [Pg.124]

The Desktop, simply put, is the virtual desk upon which all of your other programs and utilities run. By default it contains the Start menu the Taskbar and a number of icons. The Desktop can also contain additional elements, such as Web page content, through the use of the Active Desktop option. Because it is the base on which everything else sits, how the Desktop is configured can have a major effect on how the GUI looks and how convenient it is for users. [Pg.474]

Speedy and accurate desktop computers and modern programs such as HYPERCHEM place quantum mechanical calculations within the reach of any experimental chemist. The CURES-EC procedure simulates equilibrium methods of measuring electron affinities by calculating the difference between the optimized forms of the anion and neutral. The READS-TCT determination of charge densities in anion complexes simulates thermal charge transfer experiments. The effect of... [Pg.165]

Chemists have increasingly used computational chemistry to study aspects of organometallic chemistry. Although Chapter 2 and subsequent chapters make good use of qualitative molecular orbital theory, the ready availability of easy-to-use computational chemistry software and the powerful capability of modem desktop computers allow chemists to effectively model complex systems to obtain minimum energy geometry of molecules, determine transition state energies, and predict the course of chemical reactions, particularly if two or more isomeric products could form. Researchers have modeled entire catalytic cycles, which... [Pg.42]

The commercial development of computer-based control systems for tractors and other agricultural implements has provided a platform that enables coded mapped information to be effectively transferred from a desktop computer to the tractor cab. Initially developed in conjunction with GPS field location for yieldmapping applications, this type of system is now being incorporated into tractors and specialised application vehicles (see Figure 4.6). These can be used to give access to the treatment map in the field, and hence control signals for the application system. Data transfer is commonly by smart cards with current systems, but it is likely that future developments will use radio/telephone connections to automate the data transfer process (Miller, 1999). [Pg.69]
