Workstations design

Some workers may experience fatigue, eye strain, upper limb disorders and backache from overuse or improper use of DSE. Upper limb disorders include problems of the arms, hands, shoulders and neck linked to work activities. These problems can also be experienced from poorly designed workstations or working environment. The cause may not be obvious and can be due to a combination of factors. [Pg.14]

Design workstations, when possible, to allow operators to work in both sitting and/or standing positions. [Pg.317]

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Although it technically is not limited to humans, as an applied science, it almost always is. Kinesiology is primarily concerned with all kinds of physical activity, including competitive sports and activities designed to maintain and improve health. It is a major part of physical rehabilitation and injury prevention, and it can be used to design workstations that are ergonomic and minimize hazards. [Pg.1087]

Ergonomics is most important in a lean endeavor at the design level. By their nature, well-designed workstations eliminate waste and many of the risk factors associated with traditional workstations and functional layouts. [Pg.440]

The detailed functional requirements of each installation are defined by the applications data, which is compiled into about 60k bytes of object data, and stored in EPROMs in each channel of the central equipment. Data editing, compilation and simulation are carried out off-line on multi-user Design Workstation Systems (DWS), using software developed specifically for SSI. [Pg.178]

NAMD [7] was born of frustration with the maintainability of previous locally developed parallel molecular dynamics codes. The primary goal of being able to hand the program down to the next generation of developers is reflected in the acronym NAMD Not (just) Another Molecular Dynamics code. Specific design requirements for NAMD were to run in parallel on the group s then recently purchased workstation cluster [8] and to use the fast multipole algorithm [9] for efficient full electrostatics evaluation as implemented in DPMTA [10]. [Pg.473]

As noted above, one of the goals of NAMD 2 is to take advantage of clusters of symmetric multiprocessor workstations and other non-uniform memory access platforms. This can be achieved in the current design by allowing multiple compute objects to run concurrently on different processors via kernel-level threads. Because compute objects interact in a controlled manner with patches, access controls need only be applied to a small number of structures such as force and energy accumulators. A shared memory environment will therefore contribute almost no parallel overhead and generate communication equal to that of a single-processor node. [Pg.480]

The confluence of sharply rising Operations and Maintenance (O M) costs. NRC requested Individual Plant Examinations (IPEs) and increased personal computer capabilities gave rise to the R R Workstation. Its uses and maintains-current PSA models and databases for individual plants to perform O M planning and scheduling, and uses the PSA in IPE models to identify plant design, procedure and operational vulnerabilities. The Risk and Reliability Workstation Alliance was organized by EPRI to support the R R Workshop in order to achieve O M cost reduction, plant productivity and safety enhancement through risk-based, user-friendly, windowed software louls (Table 3.6 8). The Alliance, initiated in 1992, includes 25 U.S. utilities and four international partners from Spain, France, Korea, and Mexico. SAIC is the prime contractor for the R R Workstation, with participation of five other PSA vendors. [Pg.144]

The speed, graphics, memory and key/knob menu access methods take full advantage of Hewlett-Packard workstation facilities, a combination that is still hard to match four years since design. [Pg.463]

Products in Group 3 seem to us to represent the future of practical batch process control. In such systems, modern workstations perform the single-user functions (e.g control system design, set-up, and maintenance operator interface data collection historical reporting) for which they were designed, while powerful multitasking controllers perform actual control. As computer hardware and software standards continue to evolve toward distributed networks of processors optimized for specific kinds of tasks, such systems will, we feel, proliferate rapidly. [Pg.474]
