Defense System

Masks and protective clothing arc needed to defend against many toxic chemicals. Reduction in combat efficiency from wearing protective gear is estimated to be up to 50 percent. Proliferators may not provide the same measure of protection that is afforded U.S. troops. Training and protection reduce the effectiveness of chemical weapons. 

Numerous countries produce chemical protective gear. Production of masks is the most common, including masks for civilians (as seen in Israel during Operation Desert Storm), although limited shelf life remains a problem. A number of countries have developed collective protection for shelters Finland, France, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Since 1990 Nonh Korea has placed a high priority on military and civilian chemical defense readiness.

In order to support the design and fabrication of the prototypical flow train, extensive component testing at the 50 MW level was performed at the CDIF, in addition to testing of electrodes and sidewalls and of coal-fired channels of 20 MW si2e at Textron Defense Systems. 

Endotoxin and Muramyl Dipeptide Derivatives. Bacterial cell wall constituents such as the Hpopolysaccharide endotoxin and muramyl dipeptide, which stimulate host defense systems, show radioprotective activity in animals (204). Although endotoxin is most effective when given - 24 h before irradiation, it provides some protection when adrninistered shortiy before and even after radiation exposure. Endotoxin s radioprotective activity is probably related to its Hpid component, and some of its properties may result from PG and leukotriene induction (204). 

Biological Antioxidant Models. Tea extracts, tea polyphenol fractions, and purified catechins have all been shown to be effective antioxidants in biologically-based model systems. A balance between oxidants and antioxidants is critical for maintenance of homeostasis. Imbalances between free radicals and antioxidants may be caused by an increased production of free radicals or decreased effectiveness of the antioxidants within the reaction system. These imbalances can be caused by the radicals overwhelming the antioxidants within the system, or by an excess of antioxidants leading to a prooxidant functionaHty (105—118). Blood-forming tissues consist of bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes and the reticuloendothelial system. These produce the elements of blood and are important for the immunological defense systems. 

TLRs and is highly active in pDC which are robust producers of IFN-a and represent crucial effector cells of the innate defense system.

Large granular lymphocytes, not belonging to either the T- or B-cell lineage. Natural killer (NK) cells are considered part of the innate defense system since, in contrast to cytotoxic T-cells, they are able to kill certain tumor cells in vitro without prior sensitization. The basal activity of NIC cells increases dramatically following stimulation with type I IFNs. In addition, NK cells display Fc-receptors for IgG and are important mediators of Antibody-Dependent-Cell-mediated-Cytotoxicity (ADCC).

Prostaglandins, one of the most important epithelial growth factors, inhibit gastric acid secretion and have numerous mucosal protective effects, the most important of which include the stimulation of both mucus and phospholipid production, promotion of bicarbonate secretion, and increased mucosal cell turnover. Damage to the mucosal defense system is the primary method by which HP or NSAIDs cause peptic ulcers.
