Large granular lymphocyte

Neutrophils and host defence The fight against infection [Pg.18]

Large granular lymphocytes, not belonging to either the T- or B-cell lineage. Natural killer (NK) cells are considered part of the innate defense system since, in contrast to cytotoxic T-cells, they are able to kill certain tumor cells in vitro without prior sensitization. The basal activity of NIC cells increases dramatically following stimulation with type I IFNs. In addition, NK cells display Fc-receptors for IgG and are important mediators of Antibody-Dependent-Cell-mediated-Cytotoxicity (ADCC). [Pg.820]

Null cells are also known as large granular lymphocytes , but are best known as natural killer (NK) cells. These represent a third lymphocyte subgroup. They are capable of directly lysing cancer cells and virally infected cells. [Pg.207]

It is essential for viruses to penetrate the cells of an infected host in order to subvert the cells replicative machinery towards viral replication. Clearly, it is in the interests of the host to kill such infected cells before the virus has had a chance to reproduce. Natural killer (NK) cells are cytotoxic cells that appear to have evolved to carry out just such a task. The precise lineage of NK cells is still uncertain. They are large granular lymphocytes that attach themselves to structures, presumably glycoproteins, that appear on the surface of virally infected... [Pg.177]

Natural killer (NK) cells are bone marrow-derived large granular lymphocytes playing an important role in the innate immunity, especially against viruses and tumor cells, and they form 10-15% of the total lymphocyte population. NK cells have the ability to lyse cells without specific antigen recognition, and these cells may be considered as effector cells, especially in the innate... [Pg.48]

So-called natural, or nonadaptive immunity also appears to have a prominent role in controlling the malignant phenotype of tumor cells. Both mice and humans with a low natural killer (NK) activity are more susceptible to develop metastases, whereas adoptive transfer of purified large granular lymphocytes (LGL a subset of cells closely associated with NK activity) to immunosuppressed rodents restored their resistance to metastasis (reviewed in White-side et al., 1998). LGL and Kupffer cells are involved in the defense system of the hver under various physiological and pathological conditions, hi a study with nude mice it was reported that only after... [Pg.176]

Null cells are a separate subset of lymphocytes that lack surface markers of B or T origin. These cells, also referred to as large granular lymphocytes, are thought to perform functions such as direct cytotoxicity to foreign entities, and they act either alone (natural killer cells) or in concert with immunoglobulin (antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity). (Further details regarding lymphocytes are found in Chap. 84, on the immune system.)... [Pg.1795]
