Data collection/retrieval systems

The RMDB consists of two mayor sections computer data storage and retrieval system, and backup microfilm data bank file. The computer data storage and retrieval system is used for die standard reliability and maintainability data listing, special calculations, and searches. This data bank system has been established to facilitate remote terminal access compatible with the GIDEP remote terminal programs. The microfilm data bank file is used for storage and distribution of supplier s documents, failure analysis curves, description of methods used in the collection of the data, and additional background information too extensive to include in the computer data bank. 

In the bioinformatics realm, SRS (Sequence Retrieval System) [2] is a popular system, which uses a centralized collection of data resources primarily in flat text file form and, more recently, handles XML (Extensible Markup Language) files as well. Data resources are treated in a federated manner since each is maintained in its original form. However, SRS contains a large number of cross-references between corresponding fields in various data sources, so that keyword searches can be done across them. SRS thus performs more structured searches across the information than what a simple text search provides (such as web indexes perform, for example). Even though the data model implicit in the cross-reference tables is not very deep, SRS provides a useful way for users to browse and do simple queries across a large number of data sources as well as to integrate results from some computational methods. 

SGX-CAT maintains a direct T1 network connection from the Advanced Photon Source in Illinois to SGX San Diego. Database inquiries are handled over this link. Interactions with the database occur in three ways. An extensive web-based system is used for data entry and retrieval. For crystals generated by external users of the beamline, upload of an electronic spreadsheet transfers the required crystal data attributes to the SGX LIMS. For automated operations, such as crystal screening and data collection, custom scripts place the computed results directly into the database. 

All raw data, documentation, and records generated in the design and operation of the automated data collection system must be archived in a manner that is orderly and fa-cihtates retrieval. If stored on the system, such data must be... 

The advent of microcomputer-based systems such as those described here provides a new opportunity for individuals to store and manipulate personal and proprietary data. Small data collections of up to a few thousand compounds can be stored to keep track of new research, inventories, and laboratory data. Such information has traditionally been kept in card files or unindexed file folders. When stored as a PC-based structure file, this data can be rapidly searched and specific information easily retrieved and evaluated.

Most of these systems allow data to be collected by the individuals (anytime) and by healthcare workers (during encounters with patients), which makes them ubiquitous in that respect. Some also allow data collection from registered devices. Being web based, for data retrieval they are ubiquitous as far as the web is concerned.
