Cuello was excavated by Hammond and co-workers between 1975 and 1993. It is the earliest known Preclassic Maya site, with a Preclassic occupation from ca. 1200 BC to AD 300 as well as later Classic period (AD 300-900) remains the earliest pottery-using phase (Swasey, 1200-900 BC) has not yet been found at other Preclassic sites, but the Bladen (900-600 BC) and subsequent phases match occupations elsewhere in date and material culture. The Cuello excavations have been extensively described in the report edited by Hammond (1991). Of particular relevance here are the chapters on the ecology and subsistence economy (Ch. 4) by Miksicek and by Wing and Scudder, and on the human burials (Ch. 7), by Frank and Julie Saul. More recent publications have focused on the subsistence economy (Crane and Carr 1994) and on the human skeletal remains (Saul and Saul 1997).

Genotoxic Effects. Evaluation of the genotoxicity of lead in humans has focused on evaluations of lymphocytes from occupationally or environmentally exposed persons (Table 2-10) and in vitro studies of structural chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchange in cultures of lymphocytes taken from healthy individuals (Table 2-11). Results of studies with human lymphocyte cultures exposed in vitro to lead acetate were nearly equally divided between positive (Beek and Obe 1974 Niebuhr and Wulf 1984) and negative (Beek and Obe 1975 Deknudt and Deminatti 1978 Gasiorek and Bauchinger 1981 Schmid etal. 1972). 

A Lactobacillus strain was recently shown to inhibit competitively adhesion of enteropathogenic E. coli to pig ileum and interfered with bacterial attachment to the mucosal layer of ileal conducts (Blomberg et al., 1993). Although L. acidophilus inhibits the adhesion of several enteric pathogens to human intestinal cells in culture, when pathogen attachment preceded L. acidophilus treatment, no inhibitory interference occurred indicating that steric hindrance of site occupation is important in the inhibition of adhesion. Thus, therapeutic use is likely to be limited to preventive application of probiotics.

The scope of activities of occupational toxicologists may be quite different from one organization to another, depending on its specific mission, resources available and corporate culture. In general, their activities can be divided into four broad areas data development, data evaluation and dissemination, hazard assessment, and employee training. 

Although previous studies suggested a basal tone of smooth muscle mediated by histamine binding to HRl, constitutive intrinsic activity of the HRl without any occupation by histamine might be more relevant. Histamine also induces proliferation of cultured airway smooth muscle cells [63]. 

The location of NADPH in the lateral channel of small-subunit enzymes blocks the channel such that it cannot realistically be considered to have either an inlet or exhaust function in the presence of the nucleotide. For the channel to have a role in these enzymes, it is necessary to predict that NADPH binds preferentially to the enzyme in its resting state or to inactive forms of the enzyme, such that NADPH is not bound when the enzyme is actively degrading H2O2. Thus, the variation in NADPH occupancy among enzymes might reflect the reactive history of the enzyme immediately prior to isolation, as well as the Kn for NADPH binding and the NADPH concentration. For example, enzyme isolated from a culture with high peroxide levels may have a lower amounts of bound NADPH because the enzyme is more active. 

The attempt to understand the frequently faced tediousness of substitution processes is firstly directed at individual actors, their motives and their opportunities for influence, and also at the way they utilise these opportunities or, rather, do not utilise them. The roles of these actors can then immediately be sub-divided into promoters and blockers, and an attempt will then be made to explain the success or failure of substitution as a consequence of a certain distribution of interests and powers. In fact, it always comes down to people who promote or block iimova-tions. The dust from mollusk shells can also provoke occupational allergies. Inhalation of mollusk shell dust in a nacre button factory was associated with h)q)ersensitivity pneumonitis (Orriols et ah, 1990, 1997). A similar case was identified in Korea (Kim et ah, 1982). Several Japanese investigators have described occupational asthma occurring among workers who culture oysters (Nakashima, 1969 Wada et ah, 1967).
