Damage induced in whole animals can be detected in in vivo chromosome assays in either somatic or germinal cells by examination of metaphases or the formation of micronuclei. The micronucleus test can also detect whole chromosome loss or aneuploidy in the absence of clastogenic activity and is considered comparable in sensitivity to chromosome analysis (Tsuchimoto and Matter, 1979).

Trichlorophenol may exhibit weak aneugenic and clastogenic activity. Information on other chlorophenols is inadequate to allow assessment of their genotoxicity. 

Pentachlorophenol, after metabolic activation, may exhibit weak clastogenic activity by enhancing oxidative DNA damage. 

Methyl acrylate appears to be clastogenic to mammalian cells in vitro. The preferential induction of small colonies rather than large ones in the mouse lymphoma L5178Y tk mutagenicity assay is thought to indicate that mutations arise from chromosomal damage rather than by point mutation. The clastogenic activity of methyl acrylate seen in vitro is not readily detected in vivo.

The clastogenic effects of the simultaneous application of arecoline from betel nut, plus quercetin, were greater than the action of quercetin alone.

The crude holothurins from Philippine sea cucumbers belonging to Holothuriidae family have indirect mutagenic and clastogenic activity. Although no activity was noted in vitro (Rec- assay and Ames test) after metabolic activation, these holothurins produced aberration scores in Swiss albino mice (micronuclear test) when administered intraperitoneally [29]. Nevertheless, at peroral injection, they exhibited a 35-fold reduction in activity, which indicates inactivation in the alimentary canal [29]. On the contrary, Polycarpova et al. showed the absence of mutagenic activity of cucumarioside - triterpene glycoside from the sea cucumber Cucumaria Japonica [27]. 

Clastogenic activity was evaluated in three cultures of rat liver cells. Neither chromatid aberrations nor chromosome aberrations were increased significantly. 

Micronuclei formed by aneuploidy induction can be distingnished from those produced by clastogenic activity by the presence of centromeric DNA or kinetochore...
