Products and Uses A common ingredient additive in cosmetic lotions, creams, deodorants, and skin care products. Useful as an emollient (skin softener), and emulsifer (stabilizes and suspends oils in mixture). 

Different analytes are determined by using electrochemical techniques such as differential pulse voltammetry (e.g., metal ions and chlorhexidine in oral care products, glycolic acid in creams, dyes in lipsticks) or potentiometry (e.g., inorganic compounds and anionic and cationic surfactants in personal care products). Modified carbon electrodes and biosensors have been developed to determine some cosmetic ingredients by techniques such as voltammetry or potentiometry.

Lecithin is widely used as an emulsifying agent, allowing oil and water to mix. It is used in ice creams, salad dressings, and cosmetics, and it is the main ingredient in nonstick cooking sprays. Lecithin is the emulsifier in egg yolks that allows the oil and water to mix to make mayonnaise. 

Many major cosmetic companies have marketed antiaging creams and skin-renewal products containing alpha hydroxy acids as the miracle ingredients. These particular components are easily identified in a list of a lotion s ingredients, provided you know some simple chemistry nomenclature. 

The human skin is a rather complex structure, which protects the body against the environment. The aim of the different cosmetics is to repair and restore the original balance of elements in skin structure. Cosmetic preparations would need to consider any reaction between them and the components of the skin. Skin creams are known to be composed of a variety of ingredients, which are based on end use (hands, feet, face, hair, etc.), and some speciality products that are applied to the skin to repair effects such as dryness. We will now consider some recipes for skin creams. Since the number of personal care emulsion creams is very large, only a few typical examples are given here. A variety of emulsion skin care products are found commercially that claim to exhibit properties for nurturing and protecting the skin. 

A-Nitrosodiethanolamine at levels of 600-7386 ppb was detected in 11 samples of cosmetics in the United States which included hand creams, face creams, shampoos, cocoa butter cream, moisturizing lotion and a make-up remover (all products listed diethanolamine and/or triethanolamine as ingredients) (Tunick etal., 1982). TV-Nitroso-diethanolamine was found in all seven cosmetic formulations one with traces (< 10 ng/g) and six at levels of 41 7 000 ng/g and in 12 of 13 lotions (seven with traces <10 ng/g and five with 14-140 ng/g) and in eight of nine hair shampoos (three with traces < 10 ng/g and live with 17-280 ng/g) in the United States (Fan et al., 1977b). Of 191 cosmetics analysed, 77 contained from 10 to more than 2000 ppb N-nitrosodiethanolamine (Elder, 1980). Westin etal. (1990) analysed 20 different suntan lotions in Israel and found that three were contaminated with 17-27 ppb TV-nitroso-diethanolamine (with traces 5-10 ppb).
