Emulsions skin care

The human skin is a rather complex structure, which protects the body against the environment. The aim of the different cosmetics is to repair and restore the original balance of elements in skin structure. Cosmetic preparations would need to consider any reaction between them and the components of the skin. Skin creams are known to be composed of a variety of ingredients, which are based on end use (hands, feet, face, hair, etc.), and some speciality products that are applied to the skin to repair effects such as dryness. We will now consider some recipes for skin creams. Since the number of personal care emulsion creams is very large, only a few typical examples are given here. A variety of emulsion skin care products are found commercially that claim to exhibit properties for nurturing and protecting the skin. [Pg.194]

The physicochemical nature of the oil phase components in a cosmetic emulsion, the emollients, determines the skin-care effects, such as smoothing, spreading, sensorial appearance. Test methods have been developed to characterize and classify the numerous emollients available on the market, such as silicones, paraffins, and oleochemical-based products. The latter include glycerides, esters, alcohols, ethers, and carbonates with tailor-made structures, depending on the performance needed (Table 4.8). However, especially with regard to additional effects, there is still a demand for new products with unique performance properties. [Pg.95]

Squalene is preferred for skin care due to its notably high emollient properties. It can be easily absorbed deep by the skin acting as a normal-izer for flexibility and suppleness of the skin without presenting an oily residue. Blasco et al. (2006) studied emulsions for skin constituents in... [Pg.228]

The system was originally developed to formulate sun oils (solutions of ultraviolet absorbers in emollients) but has been rapidly extended, with the incorporation of basic emulsion technology, to cover oil-in-water lotions. Subsequently, the system has been further expanded to incorporate water-in-oil, oil-in-water, and water-in-silicone creams and lotions. It can now be used to formulate all types of skin care products, not just sun care products. The system won second prize in the UK DTI Manufacturing Intelligence Awards in 1991. It is the only system for which the developers have given details of costings and quantitative benefits. [Pg.1666]

Aloe vera is a well-known active with good skin care properties. Fluid milks have been suggested for skin care products with Aloe vera [59]. They have good sensorics and no tacky or sticky feel. In the area of skin cleansers, the addition of a PIT emulsion to a cleanser formulation was described [60]. The result is a rather mild and non-irritant lotion for make-up removal. A similar approach describes the addition of a PIT emulsion with phospholipid to a body cleanser [61]. This product has two functions it combines cleaning and refattening properties. [Pg.241]
