The Preservation standard is the existing condition or the New Construction/Reconstruction standard, whichever is less, for each of the 13 controlling design elements. The demand for DRI varies depending on local market conditions. Process-variable feedback for the controller is achieved by one of two methods. The process variable can (I) be measured and transmitted to the controller by using a separate measurement transmitter with a 0.2-I.0-bar (3-15-psi pneumatic output, or (2) be sensed directly by the controller, which contains the measurement sensor within its enclosure. Controllers with integral sensing elements are available that sense pressure, differential pressure, temperature, and level. Some controller designs have the set point adjustment knob in the controller, making set point adjustment a local and manual operation. Other types receive a set point from a remotely located pneumatic source, such as a manual air set regulator or another controller, to achieve set point adjustment. There are versions of the pneumatic controller that support the useful one-, two-, and three-mode combinations of proportional, integral, and derivative actions. Other options include auto/manual transfer stations, antireset windup circuitry, on/off control, and process-variable and set point indicators. [Pg.776]

The pneumatic controller is designed so that 0 to 100 percent output is also represented by 0.2 to 1.0 bar (3 to 15 psig). The output signal is sent through tubing to the control valve or other final control element. Most pneumatic controllers provide a manual control mode where the output pressure is manually set by operating personnel. If operated on clean, dry plant air, pneumatic controllers offer good performance and are extremely reliable. In many cases, however, plant air is neither clean nor dry. A poor-quality air supply will cause unreliable performance of pneumatic controllers, pneumatic field measurement devices, and final control elements. The main shortcoming of the pneumatic controller is its lack of flexibility when compared to modem electronic controller designs. Increased range of adjustability, choice of alternative control algorithms, the communication link to the control system, and other features and services provided by the electronic controller make it a superior choice in most of todays applications. Controller performance is also affected by the time delay induced by pneumatic tubing mns. For example, a 100-m run of 6.35-mm ( -in) tubing will typically cause 5 s of apparent process dead time, which will limit the control performance of fast processes such as flows and pressures. [Pg.72]

The state variables that provide valve position control are used to diagnose the health of the final control element. In addition, some digital valve controller designs integrate additional sensors into their construction to provide increased diagnostic capability. For example, pressure sensors are provided to detect supply pressure, actuator pressure (upper and lower cylinder pressures in the case of a springless piston actuator), and internal pilot pressure.
