Design/build contract

DOE, through Brookhaven National Laboratories, has recently issued a contract for an industrial team to design, build, and test a prototype metal hydride heat pump for residential, commercial or industrial applications. This three-year program is intended to assess the commercial viability of this technology. 

Early in 1951 (probably in late March), Kellogg won a contract to build a gasoline synthesis facility for Sasol employing synthesis gas from coal (Pay, 1980 Dry, 1981). For the plant at Sasolburg, South Africa, the synthesis section would be essentially Kellogg s 1948 design for Cities Service, with minor modifications. Figure 4 is a sketch of a Sasol fast-bed reactor.

There are several qualified civil contractors with capability of handling 25 plus workers. Two of them are experienced on design-build contracts. 

When the details of the design have been finalized, the equipment can be purchased and the plant can be built. Procurement and construction are usually carried out by an EPC firm unless the project is very small. Because they work on many different projects each year, the EPC firms are able to place bulk orders for items such as piping, wire, valves, etc., and can use their purchasing power to get discounts on most equipment. The EPC companies also have a great deal of experience in field construction, inspection, testing, and equipment installation. They can therefore normally contract to build a plant for a client cheaper (and usually also quicker) than the client could build it on its own.

Veolia Water wins two design-build contracts for wastewater authority in Paris... 

Veolia Water has been awarded tw o design build contracts by the SI AAR the w astew ater authority for the Paris area in France, to ensure the compliance of the treated w astew ater discharged into the River Seine. 

The RFP package is issued to a group of prequalified design-build contractors. Bids are received and evaluated by the owner/agent, and a contract is issued to the successful contractor. 

The team design/construct project approach, as depicted in Figure 13, is set up with separate contracts between the owner and the A E and GC, hke the design-bid-build process, but the detail design is completed in sequential steps like the design-build process. 

Hitco Carbon Composites Inc. of Gardena, CA., USA has won a four-year contract to build vapor barrier assemblies for 60 Boeing C-17 aircraft. The autoclaved, foam-cored glass fiber/epoxy panel assembhes measure 6.5 m long by 5.5 m wide (21 ft by 18 ft) with compound curvature, designed to prevent fuel and fuel vapors from the main fuel tanks from penetrating the plane s cargo area. 

Historically Logica has focused on design and build projects with relatively few service projects undertaken. Today the situation is reversed with major design-build-operate contracts, and many applications management / infrastructure management projeets (where the development work has already been completed by another contraetor or by the client, and the contract is largely for maintenance/ evolution).

The excellent performance of austenitic stainless steel in normal atmospheres combined with the possibility to spot-weld this structural material, tempted a major manufacturer of stainless steel trains in the United States to bid for a contract to build two hundred all-stainless steel air freighters to carry troops, tanks, and guns during the World War II efforts. In fact, the first entry of the Budd Company in the world of aeronautics was made in 1930 through the contract manufacture of aircraft wheels and stainless steel wing ribs, following which a complete aircraft was designed and built by the company in 1931, the BB-1 Pioneer amphibian (Fig. 9.48). 

The HP s narrative on postponement is well-known to many. They used the notion of core plus peripherals , which is a variation of modular design. HP built a core printer with a large number of common modules that did not vary with customers. They also created peripheral components, each with specific functionality, that could be assembled to the core at the distribution centers or at customer sites. This allowed HP to postpone customization of printers for its European customers, who needed multiple language support. Lucent Technology used the same principle for successfully bidding on a Saudi contract. By building the core in advance of the order, they could satisfy a stringent delivery time constraint in the Saudi contract (Hoyt et al. 2007 Chakravarty 2010).
