The truly remarkable feature is that the values of the various critical exponents are universal, i.e., independent of the chemical constitution of materials whose properties are being studied near their respective critical points. As already stated, for fluids this feature arises because the range of fluctuations in properties such as density greatly exceeds atomic dimensions. [Pg.403]

In this first section of the book, our intention has been to illustrate the abstract representation of materials by different material parameters and to show how via the structure-properties linkage, material properties can be tuned by controlling the structures themselves. From a quantitative viewpoint, material response is characterized in terms of a series of material parameters that we have argued depend heavily on the internal constitution of materials at a number of different scales. These internal structures can be controlled by a number of different processing strategies. The t test is also used to judge whether a given lot of material conforms to a particular specification. If both plus and minus departures from the known value are to be guarded against, a two-tailed test is involved. If departures in only one direction are undesirable, then the 10% level values for t are appropriate for the 5% level in one direction. Dielectric Constant The dielectric constant of material represents its ability to reduce the electric force between two charges separated in space. This propei ty is useful in process control for polymers, ceramic materials, and semiconduc tors. Dielectric constants are measured with respect to vacuum (1.0) typical values range from 2 (benzene) to 33 (methanol) to 80 (water). TEe value for water is higher than for most plastics. A measuring cell is made of glass or some other insulating material and is usually doughnut-shaped, with the cylinders coated with metal, which constitute the plates of the capacitor. [Pg.764]

As with any constitutive theory, the particular forms of the constitutive functions must be constructed, and their parameters (material properties) must be evaluated for the particular materials whose response is to be predicted. In principle, they are to be evaluated from experimental data. Even when experimental data are available, it is often difficult to determine the functional forms of the constitutive functions, because data may be sparse or unavailable in important portions of the parameter space of interest. Micromechanical models of material deformation may be helpful in suggesting functional forms. Internal state variables are particularly useful in this regard, since they may often be connected directly to averages of micromechanical quantities. The Plate Constitutive equations can be used for curved plates provided the radius of curvature is large relative to the thickness (typically r/h > 50).
