In contrast, data from a recent conference presentation by Choc and Robinson [100], indicated that cyclosporin metabolite ratios were similar after oral administration of either Sandimmun or the Neoral formulation, suggesting minimal changes in cyclosporin first-pass metabolism after Neoral administration. Furthermore, Neoral/Sandimmun area under the curve (AUC) ratios were similar (approximately 2) after cyclosporin administration in either the absence or presence of a CYP3A/P-gp inhibitor, whereas an AUC ratio of approximately 1 would have been expected if bioavailability was limited by metabolism or antitransport. However, these data have not yet been published, and the relative contributions of enhanced absorption or reduced metabolism in the CY bioavailability enhancement provided by Sandimmun Neoral are yet to be fully defined. 

Conferences present an opportunity to learn what other companies are doing in specific areas and to interface and network with colleagues. Mike Wyrick, chairman of the PDA Computer Validation Committee, published the following top ten quality noncompliance observations recorded by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspectors. The data were collated from over 700 inspection citations issued between 1984 and 1999, and from conference presentations by European inspectors who highlighted similar issues. 

An alternative approach has been taken by Agrafiotis and colleagues. In a conference presentation (106) they show how a neural network can be trained on a small sample of enumerated combinatorial products to reproduce 2D molecular descriptors and properties for all library members without the need to construct their connection tables. 

These results demonstrate that nanostrucmred carbon materials can be evaporated or undergo phase changes/transformations upon laser excitation of significantly lower intensity compared to bulk materials. Even the power of laser pointers commonly used during conference presentations or in the class room (up to 100 mW) is enough to heat carbon samples up to 3,500°C, evaporate and redeposit graphitic nanocarbons or convert nanodiamond into carbon onions, when focused to a spot size of several micrometers. 

The comments in this chapter apply equally to informal talks, e.g. those based on assignments and project work, and to more formal conference presentations. It is hoped that the advice and guidance given below will encourage you to make the most of your opportunities for public speaking, but there is no substitute for practice. Do not expect to find all of the answers from this, or any other, book. Rehearse, and learn from your own experience.
