No silver bullets here—perhaps just common sense to be converted to common practice through self-discipline.

The DOM output of one system becomes an input to the next. Because the character of major inputs influences the composition and diversity of microbial communities, community activities may respond in a potentially predictable fashion along such a gradient. The complication is that downstream systems can differ in hydrologic, physical, and chemical properties, and may receive DOM inputs from varied sources. The new selective regime may obscure patterns of connectivity. 

Over-communicate. Communication is the single most underrated component of implementation. Organizations need to explicitly define a communication strategy that will last throughout the entire change program. 

Communication communicating the new culture within the organization is also important. This may involve symbolic actions, such as introducing new department names and titles (see section 25.5.3). 

Recently, a group of experts working under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities, Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sought to improve comparability between sequential extraction results obtained by different laboratories, and proposed a simple, three-stage sequential extraction procedure for sediment (Table 10.3) (Ure et d., 1993a, b). The protocol was then refined through two sets of interlaboratory trials (Quevauviller et d., 1994) and studies were conducted to assess whether adequate homogeneity and stability could be achieved to allow certification of a reference material for metals extractable by the procedure (Fiedler et d., 1994).

Communications, called letters or correspondence in some publications, are usually preliminary reports of special significance and urgency that are given expedited publication. They are accepted if the editor believes that their rapid publication will be a service to the scientific community. Communications are generally subject to strict length limitations they must contain specific results to support their conclusions, but they may not contain nonessential experimental details.

The notion of flexibility and autonomy was encouraged with the CZM online module and created independence among distance learners. The main defining feature of online delivery was the separation of tutor and learner, usually in both time and space. This separation fostered noncontiguous communication (communication that occurred between the learner and teacher from a distance), which had to be mediated. Consequently, mediated communication became the second defining feature of e-leaming as mediated communication is an important feature in both e-leaming and traditional distance education [9].

Communicating. Communication is the essence of language arts, and communication surrounds us in this Information Age. Individuals and groups exchange ideas and information—oral and written—face-to-face, in newspapers and magazines, through radio and television, and online. From the simplest Yes, ma am to the most complex technical manuals, language is the basis and the joy of all human communication. 

The same rigorous standards of acceptance that apply to full-length papers also apply to communications. Communications are submitted to review, and they are not accepted if the editor believes that the principal content has been published elsewhere. In many cases, authors are expected to publish complete details (not necessarily in the same journal) after their communications have been published. Acceptance of a communication, however, does not guarantee acceptance of the detailed manuscript. 

Communication Communication is important in preventing friendly fire accidents. The US. Army Black Hawk helicopters carried a full array of standard avionics, radio, IFF, and radar equipment as well as communication equipment consisting of FM, UHF, and VHP radios. Each day the FM and UHF radios were keyed with classified codes to allow pilots to talk secure in encrypted mode. In the United States, the legislation known as SARA Tide III (Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act) has led to the creation on Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs). These committees can be used as a forum for community communication and for the creation of emergency response plans.

It was pointed out in Chapter 2 that arrays possess unique features from a radar cross section point of view. To reduce the RCS outside the operating band of an antenna in general, a bandpass radome is often placed in front of it (see Chapter 2, Fig. 2.1). In the case of an array we recall from Chapter 2 that a low RCS is obtained when the terminal reflection coefficient is low in other words, the bandwidth of the array should ideally exceed that of the radome. Furthermore, due to the high price tag of arrays in general, it is desirable to pass on as much information through them as possible. Thus, we shall in this chapter consider the principles for broadband arrays, which is of interest to the communication community.
