A special blend of polymers that produces an air-cure film which bonds polyester resins and coatings to epoxy resins and coatings. Can be spray, brush or roller applied. Also excellent for use as an air-cure coating for corrosion-resistant air-inhibited systems. [Pg.297]

Syntactic Cellular Polymers. Syntactic cellular polymer is produced by dispersing rigid, foamed, microscopic particles in a fluid polymer and then stabilizing the system. The particles are generally spheres or microhalloons of phenoHc resin, urea—formaldehyde resin, glass, or siUca, ranging 30—120 lm dia. Commercial microhalloons have densities of approximately 144 kg/m (9 lbs/fT). The fluid polymers used are the usual coating resins, eg, epoxy resin, polyesters, and urea—formaldehyde resin. [Pg.408]

Aqueous dispersions are used in fiber bonding, paper coating, friction and abrasive appHcations, and laminates and wood bonding. Ambient-cure systems are often based on lower molecular-weight soHd epoxy resins cured with aUphatic polyamines or polyamides. Curing normally occurs at ambient temperatures with a working life (pot life) of 8—24 h, depending on the formulation. Epoxy—poly amine systems are typically used for maintenance coatings in oil refineries, petrochemical plants, and in many marine appHcations. Such coverings are appHed by spray or bmsh. A waterborne system for container coatings was developed based on a graft copolymerization of an advanced epoxy resin and an acryHc (52). The acryhc-vinyl monomers are grafted onto preformed epoxy resins in the presence of a free-radical initiator grafting occurs mainly at the methylene group of the aHphatic backbone on the epoxy resin. The polymeric product is a mixture of methacrylic acid—styrene copolymer, soHd epoxy resin, and graft copolymer of the unsaturated monomers onto the epoxy resin backbone. In addition to electrical uses, epoxy casting resins are utilized in the manufacture of tools, ie, contact and match molds, stretch blocks, vacuum-forrning tools, and foundry patterns, as weU as bench tops and kitchen sinks. Systems consist of a gel-coat formulation designed to form a thin coating over the pattern which provides a perfect reproduction of the pattern detail. This is backed by a heavily filled epoxy system which also incorporates fiber reinforcements to give the tool its strength. For moderate temperature service, a Hquid bisphenol A epoxy resin with an aHphatic amine is used. For higher temperature service, a modified system based on an epoxy phenol novolak and an aromatic diamine hardener may be used. [Pg.371]

Thin coatings consist of paints and varnishes, which are applied as liquids or powdered resin with a thickness of about 0.5 mm [e.g., epoxy resin (EP) [2]]. A tank with a fixed cover of plain carbon steel for storing 60°C warm, softened boiler feed water that had a tar-pitch epoxy resin coating showed pits up to 2.5 mm deep after 10 years of service without cathodic protection. Two separate protection systems were built into the tank because the water level varied as a result of service conditions. A ring anode attached to plastic supports was installed near the bottom of the tank and was connected to a potential-controlled protection rectifier. The side walls were protected by three vertical anodes with fixed adjustable protection current equipment. [Pg.459]

Generally, systems developed in the USA favour a combination of polyethylene with either butyl-rubber or hot-applied mastic adhesives, the latter consisting of a blend of rubber, asphalt and high molecular weight resins.
