Polyesters of this class vary from heavy, sticky gums to brittle but tacky solids. For this reason they are seldom handled in this form but are immediately diluted with the monomer of choice. The resins are available in a wide range of viscosities. Most of the marketed resins yield rigid materials when cured. Flexible resins are available but are used for blending with rigid ones to impart flexibility. The properties of a typical general-purpose resin for matched die-molding work are lisied in Table 15-9. [Pg.966]

The Chevrolet Corvette was one of the first major applications of RPs in the automotive field (USA 1953). The body was made of short E-glass fibers with TS-polyester RP molded largely by the low-pressure hand lay-up and matched die molding (Chapter 5). [Pg.12]

For RPs, electroformed molds are mainly useful for autoclave molding and for closed matched die molding (cold press, low-pressure hot press, resin injection, resin transfer, low-pressure phenolic molding, and resin casting) as well as for reinforced reaction injection molding (RKIM). Prototyping can also use this technique for mold-making. [Pg.449]

S Matched Die Molding. All of the above techniques are relatively specialized processes for small production runs. For economical mass production of uniform quality products, matched die molding is the standard technique. This is used for manufacture of auto and apphance parts. [Pg.196]

Matched steel dies are chrome plated and operated in heated compression presses. The entire premix is placed in the mold and pressed and heated 1 to 2 min to produce complete cure. Matched die molding is apphed to bulk molding compound, sheet molding compound, prepregs, and performs. [Pg.196]

Sheet Molding Compound (SMC). Liquid resin is spread onto a moving web of polyethylene film. Glass roving is chopped and spread over it. More resin is spread over that, and a second polyethylene film is overlaid on it. The assembly is kneaded to remove air and distribute resin and fibers more uniformly. Then, it is rolled up and stored untb use. For molding, a portion of the leathery sheet is cut, placed in the matched die mold, pressed, and heated about a minute, until cured. [Pg.197]

The preimpregnated fabric is cut to the desired shape and hand laid into or onto the mold. Successive layers can be oriented to optimize properties. Then, the assembly is matched die molded or vacuum bag molded until cured. [Pg.197]
