Figure 4c shows that the amount of adsorbed proteins is rapidly saturated within several minutes of exposing serum-containing medium to a surface. Albumin, the most abundant serum protein, was expected to preferentially adsorb onto the surfaces during early time points. Then, adsorbed albumin was expected to be displaced by cell adhesion proteins. To investigate the effect of preadsorbed albumin displacement on cell adhesion, SAMs were first exposed to albumin then, HUVECs suspended in a serum-supplemented medium were added [21, 42]. Very few cells adhered to hydrophobic SAMs that had been pretreated with albumin, due to the large interfacial tension between water and the hydrophobic surfactant-like surface. Albumin was infrequently displaced by the cell adhesive proteins Fn and Vn. One the other hand, HUVECs adhered well to hydrophilic SAM surfaces that had been preadsorbed with albumin. In that case, the preadsorbed albumin was readily displaced by cell adhesive proteins. 

Anchoring junctions between cells involve cell adhesion proteins known as cadherins which are tissue specific, so that cells normally adhere only to similar cells. In tissues that require enhanced mechanical strength, special points of attachment exist where microfilaments in adjacent cells are linked to opposed arrays of cadherins. 

Cell adhesion protein (intercellular adhesion molecule) lCAM-1 is up-regulated. This protein plays a role in cell-cell adhesion and leukocyte migration. 

In contrast, through eons of evolution Nature has come up with many biopolymers that can combine important mechanical properties including strength, toughness, and elasticity. The significance of exon shuffling to protein evolution, in particular in respect to the development of multicellularity, is signified by a short inventory of processes involving proteins created by modular assembly. Exon shuffling facilitates the construction of proteins involved in regulation of blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and complement activation, plus most constituents of the extracellular matrix, cell adhesion proteins, and receptor proteins [10, 57]. 

Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins that mainly participate in interactions with cadherins, located on other cells. Cadherins have five similar extracellular domains some of which have calcium-binding sites, and an intracellular C-terminal domain that interacts with the actin cytoskeleton. Different cadherins are named according to the tissues were they were first found. E-cadherins were found in many epithelial cells. N-cadherins are present in nerves and muscle and P-cadherin are present in placental cells. 

Desmosomes are intercellular junctions, consisting of two cell membranes, separated by an interspace. The interspace contains dense fibrillar plaques rich in cell adhesion proteins of the cadherin type. Desmosomes are important for cell-cell adhesion and communication. Epithelial tissue in the body stretched mechanically is rich on desmosomes.
