Aluminium stearate

Mix D is a typical plastigel. The incorporation of such materials as fumed silicas, certain bentonites or aluminium stearate gives a paste which shows pronounced Bingham Body behaviour (i.e. it only flows on application of a shearing stress above a certain value). Metal stearates such as zinc, magnesium or aluminium stearates are commonly used as lubricants at about 1 % concentration. Other materials that have been used successfully include oxidised paraffin wax and sulphonated castor oil.

This type of dampproofing admixture is widely used in the concrete products industry, in particular the calcium and aluminium stearates. The calcium stearates can be produced by grinding stearic acid with lime or cement to produce a material containing 10-30% calcium stearate.

Increased viscosity of the base - achieved for example, by addition of 2% aluminium monostearate or colloidal silica (Aerosil) - decreases the rate of release of soluble dmgs but has little effect on the release of the less-soluble materials. (The action of aluminium stearate and Aerosil in gelling oils is discussed in section 7.4.5.)... 

Aluminium stearate is used in the manufacture of water-resistant clothes.
