For a consolidation center to achieve the goal of insulating the plant from remote or uncooperative suppliers, it should buy the parts and resell them to the plant. There are, however, impediments that make it necessary to at least start on a different footing, where the plant still purchases the parts, and the consolidation center provides handling services for materials it doesn t own. In addition, except for handling damage at the consolidation center, quality problem reports and technical information about parts must be communicated directly between the plant and the supplier. 

The consolidation center takes a considerable risk if it buys parts on a 4-month lead time to deliver them several times a day to the plant. Playing this right, particularly with thousands of items, requires good inventory control, sophisticated management, and the clout to influence suppliers to improve deliveries and reduce costs. A consolidation center typically starts out weaker than its manufacturing client in all three areas, but can catch up and become a real trading company. 

For overseas products, we should add up 2 days of process time within the supplier plant, 5 days for ground transportation on both sides of the ocean, and 10 or more days for the transoceanic passage. This produces a minimum of about 3 weeks to get one part from raw materials to overseas delivery. If the purchasing lead time is 4 months, or 17 weeks, then it means that the parts spend 14 weeks waiting. 

Technically, some of the methods used to reduce lead times domestically are equally applicable in this context. For example, milk runs could be set up in the country of origin to fill shipping containers with mixed loads from multiple suppliers. Practically, however, this is much more difficult to set up overseas tiw in the planFs own neighborhood.

The components and their lines of communication mirror those of the business. NOTE In regard to the question of application of the Code to corporations vis-i-vis real persons, business form or type should not negate nor influence conformance of individuals to the Code. The Code deals with professional services, which services must be perfoimed by real persons. Real persons in turn establish and implement policies within business structures. The Code is clearly written to apply to the Engineer and items incumbent on members of NSPE to endeavor to live up to its provisions. This applies to all pertinent sections of the Code.

Intellectual property issues need to be addressed more effectively. In the past, collaborations typically involved a company and a federal laboratory. Simple assignments of the patents or provisions for the company to license the technology were adequate. The DOE cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) Subject Invention definition can confuse intellectual property ownership. Today, the collaborations may involve several partners, the results may be used by joint ventures, or even more-creative business structures may need access to the intellectual property developed by the collaboration. Increased flexibility on how this property is managed is a key issue for the future. 

Startup-type business structures and incentive systems with the right level of parent company support to grow the businesses successfully.

The last group encompasses standard software systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems like those from SAP, Baan, or Oracle. ERP systems offer greater flexibility with respect to customization, provide support for data management, and include functionality for creating and managing a (sub)repository. The main weakness is in active analysis of business structures—that is, ERP tools typically do not offer tools for simulation process alternatives. 

The regulatory framework contains the internal aspects business structure, business development, and business processes as well as the stakeholders as an interaction partner with the outside world and the environment as an external factor that affects the enterprise. 

As I explained in the foregoing parts, our Japanese chemical industries have no advantages at all as far as feedstocks and energy are concerned. This characteristic has already been embodied in the business structure of methanol, because the feedstock cost differential is most significant. I think the production of ammonia and fertilizers will more or less follow the same shift as the methanol industries experienced. 

The enormous business size in recent days call for distributed supply units to be located across the globe and connected through a sophisticated network. Throughout this work, these isolated business structures are referred to as mobile business units. They resemble the distributed computing environment in the sense that a time-bound, constraint-based command, signal, and information get exchanged among them. 

Moving up from brick, mortar, and equipment, we then discuss possible business structures for the consolidation center and its relationship with the manufacturing plant. Finally, we briefly present the consolidation center s information needs and how they can be met through the combination of visual control and computer systems. 

If, in the following, I speak of models" or "exemplars" and of "copies" and "imitators", I will not use these terms as if there were master plans for successful development, and that in simply following them, anybody else would become equally successful. Rather the perception of success by competitors led them to seek the reasons behind it, and to the conviction that by creating similar business structures they would become equally successful. Therefore, I do not state that there is a general model for promising development or for lasting profit but I will show how industrialists, politicians and competitors in different branches and countries perceived that there might be a model or exemplar. 

Likewise, a revolution in the diamond business is in progress as the low-pressure process becomes an industrial reality. It will soon be possible to take advantage of the outstanding properties of diamond to develop a myriad of new applications. The production of large diamond crystal at low cost is a distinct possibility in the not-too-distant future and may iead to a drastic change of the existing business structure.
